Awwufelloff Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 I can't believe NFL players get paid 1 mil per sack.

It is but Shaq is up for a new contract so will they keep Shaq & cut Murph & give Shaq the money they save by cutting him or will they see Murph as the guy going forward & let Shaq walk ?
GunnerBill Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Was Shaq hurt yesterday? I missed all the injury reports with Christmas etc. If he was just a completely healthy scratch I think that says something about the value the Bills are now placing on him because a year ago if they were sitting a DE as a healthy scratch in week 17 it would have been Jerry Hughes no doubt. If they are now saying Shaq is the one they need to protect I'd say his chances of an extension have just gone up.
LABILLBACKER Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Oh and one more thing really bothered me yesterday. On his 2nd sack he turned and started doing the "make it rain" gesture. Not a good look.

It goes well with the guy under yours “why do fans care about the money the Bills have 90 million” The Bills have money freed up now so they should spend it on average or replaceable players and not worry about it? Come on. Murphy is robotic, slow, and has the worst play recognition of any DE I have watched this season. That’s very little value. Peoole are now excited because he bumped his sack total with a few meaningless ones in week 17? How quickly we forget week 16 when he was running past screens and counters like he was wearing a blindfold. Maybe some people like Trent, maybe he is a great guy, I just don’t see him adding value to a team that’s making a run. I agree with you but even with a ton of cap space we are gonna miss and not always have the best player at every position in the nfl. Edited December 30, 2019 by BuffaloSol

Take away his two sacks in garbage game and the guy totalled 3 sacks for the season and is a lousy run stopper. Let's say you add 6 million to the 7.25 million and pay someone 13-14 million who gets you 12-14 sacks and better against the run, Murphy has done next to nothing in his time here. 1

Do you basically sign Shaq long term handing him Murphy’s money basically, $7M annually? 5 yr $30-35M...? I just don’t see a lot of game left in Murphy. If we have to pick between Murphy and Shaq, and we probably do, I would strongly prefer Shaq. We really don’t need to cut Murphy until the 11th hour IF we need to cut him. He would be a late cut. IMO we will need his roster spot before the cap space.
BillsfaninSB Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Why do we care what Murphy makes? I don’t understand why this is part of the conversation. Whether he makes $1M or $10M is irrelevant. If Beane can upgrade the position either through the draft or FA he will. If he made $100K per year is worth it if the Bills can do better? Hell no!

I strongly would prefer to give Murphy’s money to Shaq and/or Phillips.
Slippery Rubber Mats Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 I think Trent had a pretty good season. About what I'd expect on average for what we pay him. I think I see a little upside there too. I don't get the hate for him at all.

He is a fairly replacement level rotational DE who is being paid starter or high end rotation money. I think unless he takes a paycut the team is going to cut him. I think they are better off cutting Murphy and Kroft and freeing up about 10 million extra in salary cap space to spend on resining the current free agency, chasing after 2 or 3 starting pieces, and having roll over space for when extensions kick in. He isn't a bad player but he just hasn't lived up to his contract. Which is unfortunate because I thought year 2 removed from his major injury he might have a breakout but he just never got it going besides flashes here or there. 6 hours ago, Jay free said: I agree that Trent Murphy is overpaid, by a large margin, and that he gets beat on coverage, edge, and misdirection plays. We need younger and more elite def ends. Keep Shaq, love, Johnson, and let's go get us a free agent that can ball.....Jerry, Trent, star, ....gotta go Hughes has been a quality player this season while Star has really turned it on since the team's rushing defense woes of the middle of the season. Star largely has been responsible for the team's improved rushing defense against some of the better rushing attacks in the league. I think that while you could argue that Hughes and Star are overpaid a bit they still provide value that is not easily replaced. 5 hours ago, CommonCents said: This is so weak, is it an attempt at humor? If Trent was your 4th DE making 2.5 million I don't see why you wouldn't keep him. But he makes a lot of money and only produces like a JAG. It would be virtually impossible for them not to take the 7 or so million they would be spending on him and get better value elsewhere.
Hampton Josh fan Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Trent is a very pleasant surprise. After a pedestrian 1st year with injuries, Trent has been an effective rotational edge player. Now if he can set the edge against Deshaun, Hyde and co., that would make him a great signing.

I don't hate Murphy but his production level is not up to his contract. He is a nice player to have as a rotational 4th DE. But he is paid starting caliber money. It is more about value vs. production. He isn't producing up to his value. I think they are better off cutting him and using his money to help off-set resining Shaq.
Kelly the Dog Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 His first step after he got that second sack was the quickest acceleration I have seen out of him since he came to the Bills, so I believe the bonus part. I also agree that he is a decent player and paid going rate for his production when he is healthy.
LB48 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I think this is nonsense. All the NFL salary sites state he has only a $150,000 performance bonus.

Trent Murphy makes $7M AAV and had 5 sacks in a rotational role for Buffalo. By contrast, Trey Flowers makes $18M AAV and had 7 sacks for Detroit in a full-time role. Trent is generally paid on par with his production--he doesn't make a crap ton relative to his position. Get out of here with all of that logic! That is so not welcome on this board!
Aussie Joe Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 If Shaq moves onto greener pastures this offseason then I’d be thinking they bring back Murphy in 2020 ... They won’t be creating two holes to fill at DE..

Shaq was our best DE this year, Murphy was the worst.
