It makes sense by the numbers as well.

McBeane had 4 first round picks in a 3 year span and if they continue to all play well they will all need to get paid in a very close window.

What you'd prefer not to have are a lot of guaranteed dollars committed long term that will make it difficult to do so.

And trading a first round pick gives you a welcome break from that extension pressure 4-5 years down the road...............while giving you potentially very high end production between now and when that 2020 first rounder came up for their 5th year option/free agency decision.

Donald would give you a proven superstar player now(with money you could walk away from) and allow you to pass on both Shaq and Phillips.

I was 100% certain that you'd be on board with it ?

Id definitely want him. Id be willing to pay. Im just more concerned about the draft picks theyd want as well. But i see your side too.

Exactly how I see it.  I would love to have him and the $$ doesn't really concern me.

The draft picks are a whole other issue though.  We NEED a high pick WR along with a few other positions, edge, OL, RB, LB another DB etc...etc.

I would not give up highly coveted draft capital for an already relatively deep and talented interior DL.  Now if it was an edge rusher like a Mack, Bosa, TJ Watt etc. I would consider investing draft capital.

For a first and a lower round pick or two, sure.

For multiple first round picks, no.

Dude is great, but you can't mortgage your future for one player.

Yes, we have still been spiraling for the last decade because we mortgaged our future trading up for Sammy Watkins.

How much would it cost to resign Phillips and Shaq? $16M per year? $20M+ the first year with guaranteed money?

We have the most cap space in the league. Allen is on a rookie contract for a few more years. We draft well.

I would call to see what they want and if there is mutual interest from Donald. No need for knee-jerk rejections.

But the main reason I'm on a message board is to make knee jerk reactions with zero consequences! It's 90% of the fun!

2020: $25M

2021: $28M

2022: $22.25M

Those will not be his cap hits post trade.

Signing bonus portion stays with the team thats trading him so for us it would be

2020: $17M

2021: $19.9M

2022: $14.25M

We would still be responsible for the roster bonus money if he is on our team at that time I believe

only if he is on the Roster when the triggers happen

No, for many reasons.  Cap hit, draft pick, etc

Exactly. Why try acquire Donald when we could use the draft picks and space to get other players. They may even turn out to be Donald’s!

I love cap space and draft picks until they turn into players I’m not too keen on.

What about him? I would want him too if it was rumored he was available. I wanted him last time he was

I said it when the trade went down.  Mack would kill the Bears ability to get better.  Which he did, so many assets to get him and the massive cap hit have now put a strangle hold on a team that needs a lot more help than Mack to contend.

Bears D with all that talent around Mack regressed this year too.

I would not mortgage the farm for Donald, we have to focus on building the offense more first and foremost.  We already have a championship quality defense, we need weapons for Josh

Exactly. The future of this franchise will be determined by the development of Josh Allen. We need to draft well, sign reasonably priced free agents who can contribute, and hope for Allen to grow. Super Bowl champions in 2019 are built by having a QB, and surrounding him with the right pieces. Overpaying for star free agents is not how you build a team these days.

I mean, how much do the Bears really need? They have $10M in space next year, and if they cut Prince Amakumara, they free up another $9M. They don’t have a first rounder rookie eating into that space either.

Really, the Bears are in fine shape. They need Mitch to get better or get another QB in that room. They can easily draft one in the second, like a Justin Herbert or Eason, sign a Fitzpatrick or a Bridgewater to compete, and EASILY compete in the NFC North next year.

They are gonna finish likely 8-8 or 7-9 after making the playoffs because their QB regressed and their offense got figured out a little bit. They aren’t 3-13 this year.

Aaron Donald is a great player.  No question.  But Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack are comparable players.  At the time Mack was traded to the Bears, Mack and Donald were neck-and-neck for best defensive player in the league.  I hate to try to defend Jalen Ramsay, but he's a supremely talented player at a premium position and he's only 24 years old.

Both the Rams and the Bears were convinced that the player they were acquiring would put them over the top in their quest for a Super Bowl title.  Both were wrong and are now paying a heavy price.

Fortunately, Beane knows that spending multiple first round picks on extremely highly paid 29-year old defensive linemen is NOT the formula for NFL success these days.

Agreed

One player on the D line is not going to take this team to the super bowl. Not when the defense is already #2 in points allowed, #3 in yards allowed. This team needs upgrades at many positions and mostly on offense!

The Eagles, the Patriots, the Ravens all proved that the Bills O line is not good enough. OG, OT  The Bills D line is not good enough, DE. The Bills outside pass rush is not good enough, OLB. The Bills receiver corps is not good enough WR, TE.

The Bills need their first round picks with all the rest. Trent Murphy gonna be 30, Hughes 31

Not trying to sidetrack the thread, but the Bears have got to move on from Mitch T next year..

Herbert won’t be there in the 2nd so they need to scape up some money for a Tannehill  or Cam Newton..

The Bears are only missing their first round pick this year at this point. Hardly the albatross you claim.

And they didn't have one last year.  Josh Jacobs, for example, would have been a very nice piece for their offense to have this year.  Perhaps Trubisky would not have regressed if they had given him more to work with.  You don't think they could use a mid-first round pick this year, with all the great receivers coming out?

There is simply no good reason to move on from Trubisky at this point. He’s playing poorly, but I believe it costs them cap space to cut or trade him.

Cam would be intriguing. I wonder if they could get him for something reasonable. If they could trade for him, his cap hit would be $19M, which is really not that much.

Uh, they have Tarik Cohen and David Montgomery. They don’t need another running back, and a first round pick at that.

Nagy needs to coach better and Mitch needs to get better. Nagy’s RPOs and trap plays got figured out and he couldn’t adjust. Mitch got worse with some tape on him in this offense. Pretty much it.
