It all depends who's available and for what price. Beane has said Free agency to fill starter spots, draft for BPA. While I agree with that, need is always considered in the draft to some degree.

I think veteran free agent OL is a good value compared to other positions. So for RT I would prefer a FA. a FA RT. Keep Spain as well. draft day 2-3 to add depth.

WR is still a huge need. I would go Free agent and draft one in the first. If AJ Green is available I would be all over him. His skill set and contract length would be ideal.

I would still draft a WR in the first because you're probably getting the bottom/end of a very talented top-tier of players that compliment what we already have. Allen needs a WR to grow with for when Brown/Beasley/Green are gone in a couple years. Teams with similar or better talent at WR than Brown/Beasley have invested many high draft picks for their young QBs recently.

Running back best value is definitely mid-rounds draft pick.

There are some very good pass rushers available in Free Agency with Clowney/Ngakoue. If either will come to Buffalo you have to do it. I've spelled out in another thread how we have the cap space to sign one and re-sign all of our current players down the road.

I would re-sign shaq if it's under 10 million/year front-loaded. I would transition tag Phillips for 1 year around 13mil. and match. Look to trade him mid-season next year if a reasonable extension can't be worked out and we are healthy at DT.

The roster is good but beyond Josh's development and retaining the major 3 free agents (Phillips, Shaq and Spain, certainly have to keep 2 out of the 3) there does need to be some additions made to supplement the talent roster.

Talent Additions in order of urgency.

1- A true WR threat opposite Brown and Beasley will set this offense to have enough firepower to more consistently move the ball against stronger defenses. I would say that given the strength of this draft at WR I would say this is probably the team’s top draft priority.

2- A Prime time edge rusher. Hughes is a solid player, Shaq is a quality player, and Murphy is barely above JAG level. The pass rush for this team tends to come from the middle as opposed to the edges. You need the ability to be able to generate pressure off all ends. Add a 10 sack a year edge rusher to this defense gives it that last piece it needs to have one of the best D-lines in the league. Given the market for DE’s will be decent this is probably the one big FA addition I would make.

3- A CB2 opposite White. This is probably the other large piece needed on defense and a starting caliber free agent add would be justified. White is a stud CB1, T.Johnson a quality slot corner, however Levi Wallace and Johnson are better suited as depth. This team could either dip into the Free agent market or spend a draft choice in round 2 or 3 to solidify this need. I think a mid-level free agency add would both be prudent and make sense given the CB market in free agency is solid.

4- A OLB to take over for Lorax. Given that Nickel is the base defense of the NFL OLB is not as huge of a positional need but there does need to be some sort of effort made to address this. Either a lower mid-level free agency signing or a draft selection in round 3-4.

5- A veteran Tight End. I love Knox but Sweeney is a depth player and Smith is a role player. I think they need to cut bait on Kroft and sign a vet tight end both to help out with depth and to take some pressure off of Knox.

6- A Between the tackles runner. I loved Gore in the beginning of the season but he is out of gas. A lower mid-level free agency add or a mid-round draft selection is a good way to address this need.

7- Quality Punting and Kicking competition. Bojo has been better as of late and so has Haush. But if this team has aspirations to have a longer run in the playoffs they need to push Haush and Bojo in camp with a quality kicker and punter. Kicking and punting are small facets of the game that can make a big difference.

8- Special Teams? This is super picky but could this team add 1-2 special teams specialists? The Special teams this year has been OK beyond punting and kicking. Roberts has solidified the return game but if you want to compete at a high level you need the ability to have as complete a roster as possible. Adding 1-2 high end ST players could be the difference between a mid-level unit and a top 10 unit.

Overall needs 1-3 will require major resources. Needs 4-6 are more so depth needs that can be addressed on smaller contracts of in rounds 3-5 in the draft. Whereas need 7-8 are more so moves around the edges that don’t require too much in terms of resources.

I wonder if the beliefs about Ford playing RT are simply a case of seeing a couple bad plays and thinking he sucks..?

No the fact this team for 3 years has not thrown for 300 yards & ranked 29th, 30th & a big jump to 24th (27th in passing) this year with this schedule in Offense is an embarrassment/joke.

Yep I enjoy offense & love watching the Saints, Baltimore, KC, GB, Minn & all teams who can put up points.

As said I hope I'm 100% wrong & McD goes all in on O & spends the majority of the $90 million on that side.

Go back to your 10-7 barnburners you yearn for.

Please stop with the 300 yard games, and yardage rankings.  They are such a small sample of what is going on.

To hit 300 yards, a QB almost always needs to throw around 40 times per game (minimum).  Josh Allen hit that number exactly ONE time this season (41 against Cleveland).  This just isn't a team that NEEDS to be aggressive in the passing game.  The defense is too good.   Every time Allen has been on pace for a 300 yard game, the offense has gone into a shell and started running out clock.

In my opinion, a very good game would be averaging over 8.0 YPA and 65% completion percentage.  Allen did that twice this season (Washington and Dallas), and was very close against the Giants.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. But this years draft is also rumored to be a fairly deep one at the WR position. I leave it to the so called experts to rate this years WR class but it does not seem unreasonable to expect that the Bills could probably draft one this year in their top 3 picks as opposed to venturing into FA and paying big bucks for one.  Following is a list of top available free agents:

WR is truly the top need for this team this off season. The 2020 class has more "potentially" good WRs than we have seen in a long time and I am all in on taking one in the top two rounds and several overall. However, "potential" is all you are getting from the draft. Outside of a true top 5 pick talent, WR may be as tough to predict as QB in regard to how well he may do in the NFL.

I think the Bills should also address WR through free agency, or a trade, as well as the draft. Green is great when he is available - but, he has missed 13 games in the last 3 years and will be 32 going into next season. I would prefer they not choose someone who has had recent injury problems and hope they do not have more. This is a position they have to hit on for this offense to get better. The options may be limited in free agency, so, maybe they can find a willing trade partner.

I think Beane would have no problem paying for a top WR. He did, in fact, consider Antonio Brown and I don't think it was the simply the money that stopped him from pursining it any further.

And just to add , wouldn’t surprise me if McBean would trade up in the draft to get a stud WR as well

As I see it, this team has four glaring needs in the following order:

1) A true #1 receiver. Look, I get it. Brown's had an amazing year, but he clearly lacks the size necessary to compete for contested passes.

2) A RT that's actually capable of blocking people. Cody Ford is pretty clearly not the answer here, as was evidenced on the last series of the last drive.

3) A DE capable of creating consistent pass rush. Shaq, while having the best season of his career is clearly a second-tier kind of guy, a Ryan Denney/Aaron Schoebel type.

4) A RB to pair with Motor. Need more size and youth at this position.

The question then is, HOW would the team best address these four areas of need? I'm of the opinion that we should be looking at FA for the WR and RT positions (as well as drafting a WR), while drafting the DE and RB. I reckon that if the team does it that way, it would allow them maximum flexibility in the draft. Agree/disagree...if so, why?

I think the needs are a bit different:

#1 DE ... Shaq and Trent will likely be gone, which leaves us with an old Hughes and nothing else

#2 WR ... as you stated, we need a possession receiver with a big catch radius

#3 CB ... Wallace and Johnson are terrible opposite Tre

#4 OLB ... Lorax will be 37 years old and on his last year of his contract

#5 RT ... Ford hasn't been great, but Nseke has been good and Ford is young

#6 RB ... you can get a complementary big back in free agency or late in the draft very easily

No the Defense is not too good.....  See vs. NE, Cleveland & Baltimore.  It was a creampuff schedule.

They haven't done it in 3 friggin years......

You really think they are better on Defense then SF, Chicage, NE, Baltimore & others who also happen to throw for 300 (and Baltimore is the anomaly, however have the most points scored), while Buffalo again is near the bottom (25th in points).

I think the plan is a sound one, many Bills fans would probably feel the same way. I like the idea of redundancy at the skill positions WR and RB ( especially in light of the fact we are not against the cap). The reason of course is we can't afford to be short on playmakers next season. Josh's 3rd year on his contract and its time to put pedal down and take advantage of the situation that has been built. We need to draft a big time receiver and sign another guy we can rely on as well. Also, a hammer type running back to go with another all-around back would be nice. I think we can roll if we do these things, amd the ones Joe mentions.

WR, OT and DE are definite top priority needs. RB, LB and CB are secondary depth related needs, IMO. I would draft OT and WR in the first and second rounds and try to get DE via free agency, if possible. They aren't going to find an impact DE where they are drafting. RB, LB and CB can be a free agents and also probably draft LB and CB as well in the middle rounds.

I think you can one:

Possibly get higgins in the first and then draft a DE or RT in round 2

Or

Take one of the many RTs in this draft in the first and take Pittman, claypool or colin Johnson later

Free agency - try like hell to get the guy from jville for our DE need, and maybe hunter Henry if the money is right

Interesting on the note about Tom not having one pass

going 20 yards. I wished we would have forced his hand to beat us deep. The dink and dunk has beaten a lot of teams for years.

That could certainly be the case, especially with me. However, I like the idea of drafting another early-round T/G hybrid prospect like Dawkins and Ford just to give the OL coach more options. Dawkins at LT and Morse at C are the only two spots I believe are locks for 2020. Spain, Feliciano, Long, and Nsekhe are all serviceabe starters but kind of mediocre to me with limited ceilings. With $90+ million in cap space and a franchise-caliber QB entering his critical third year, I'd prefer to see a top-10 OL built somehow.

My 2020 needs ranking:

1. WR

2. DE

3. RT

4. CB

5. OLB to replace Alexander

6. RB to replace Gore

7. LG

There is a plethora of WR's in this upcoming draft. The two that I am leaning towards are Michael Pittman Jr. from USC and Chase Claypool from Notre Dame. I love all the Alabama guys and Higgins, but I believe all of them will be off of the board by the time we get our 1st pick. Both know how to use their size to shield off defenders, are 6'4" 220lbs+, and excellent hands catchers.

At RB I don't think Jonathan Taylor from Wisconsin will be a viable option either as I expect him to go top 15. A guy I REALLY like who is the big type of RB we need is AJ Dillon from BC. He has kind of flown under the radar because he has played on some really bad teams, but the guy runs with ferocity and has an extra gear to him for a big guy. He's 6'0" and 250lbs, but is in good shape for his size kind of like Henry. There is a run at the 1:00 mark of the video that will make you say "WOW".

Man If we can swing both of those 2 WR will solve a lot of our problems.

That running back from Arizona State  or Oklahoma St would be great also.

1. AJ Green or draft. Possibly both

2. I disagree on Ford. He has looked fine the last three weeks.  I would be fine bringing back Nsekhe. Also can see what Waddle looks like coming off injury.  If neither of these workout then I would try to get a mid-level veteran as back-up.  I would not waste a day 1 or day 2 pick on RT.  *** If a good LT falls into the second round I can see them making a move there so they have leverage against possible Dawkins holdout. ***

3. They need an Edge player that is a stand up OLB in 4-3 base and becomes a DE in the nickel.  This is the biggest need on the team.  This should be the priority for the first round.  And they should still add another DE before day two ends.  So yes two Edge/DE players should be picked in rounds 1-3.

4. Agree. I would get a mid-level veteran here as well.  They need some experience but an upgrade in size and speed.

The rest of the draft would be used on DT, LB, and safety.

Of course all of the above gets blown up if they move Edmunds to OLB and need to find a new MLB.

He struggled early in the season but he has played well the last several weeks.  He is very likely the answer at RT.

I'm more worried about our MLB than RT.
