Has there been a "great" coach who is clearly conservative?

You don't think McDermott is conservative?

Im interested in seeing what he does that you consider conservative.

I think parts of his style are conservative but he’s not conservative in other areas.

Great example. He was not conservative until he got to playoffs and was horrible and then fired after a 14-2 season iirc.

Yeah, it shows how it can be situational. When a coach picks the right spots to be conservative or aggressive, that’s what makes a great coach. No coach should demonstrate only one specific trait. It’s a matter of adapting, and knowing when to take risks, even if it’s not in ones nature.

Clock management. Run on first down. Run pass ratio. Lack of blitzing. Never go for kill shot after turnover. Slow down play with lead. It's endless.

You can be conservative and win if you have close to 11 guys on each phase, though especially on offense and defense, who are superstars and buy into the team culture.

But most teams don't have this, so the coach has to take some chances and outthink the opposing coach to win.  McD is still learning how to be a HC; hopefully the light will come on and he'll see that sitting on 17 points with 3 to 7 point lead won't cut it against good teams.  He hasn't figured this out, yet.

Chandler for the win!

Might as well shut this thread down, after that comment!

Lombardi was not at all conservative. That's stupid. When they were great they were in the top five in offense most every year. They pressured on defense. That's ridiculous.

You got owned with that comment.  Close the thread.

Name anything at all he was conservative with. They had a dominating offense and went for the kill. They had an agressive defense. Name anything they did consistently conservative. They were the opposite.

Well let's look at it like a spectrum.

On the far conservative end is say....John Fox?  Then the really aggressive end is McVay.

I think McD is in the middle of that.
