cage Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I'll continue to refer to JoeB's All-22 analysis that comes out each week. Hughes is the #4 ranked player over the course of the year behind Singletary, T. White and Milano. In the grading system the top 8 players are clustered very tightly. It isn't until #9 that there's a bit of a drop-off Singletary (3.29), T. White, Milano, Hughes, Dawkins, J. Brown, Hyde, Oliver (3.21)...thats the top group then Taron Johnson (3.09) a bit lower. It on a 0 (F) to 4.0 (A) scale just like in school

It's valuable for the Bills to have guys like Hughes who've been in Buffalo for awhile, who has a lot of passion, who saw the difference McDermott has brought, and the progression he's made also with improving his cool-headedness from his early seasons here. Hughes is already a leader on the team, but his presence next season and perhaps beyond is more valuable than whatever savings would be earned from releasing. Exactly. There are worse DEs on the team that should go before Hughes. 1

DCOrange Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I’m not positive, but I think Hughes is leading the team in pressures by a decent margin.
HOUSE Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 Lets not judge Jerry Hughes till after the Superbowl, he might come up BIG 1
Jay free Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 If I'm the GM fellas I call Jerry, Star, Tyler, Trent, Poyer, and yeldon, and tell em all to take this significant pay cut, or get to stepping. i want the young bucks to get some time anyway......Vincent taylor, Darryl Johnson, Jaquan Johnson, .......

It has obviously been affecting his play. Jerry is still a top end DE at pressures when 100%. I was coming here to add this. Groin is an almost impossible injury to play through at 100% and the thing it effects the most is top end speed and agility, which are his strengths. He's contributing so that's awesome but I expect he will be much better in 2020 after he can properly rest it.
SydneyBillsFan Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 There is a reason why he is one of the 3 guys still on the roster from the Rex Ryan years.

He only has 1.5 sacks but imagine that dude getting anywhere near you. I know there was a play last week (that I can't find) where Edmunds crashed in on Duck untouched, and Hodges just tossed it away like "nope". Those plays don't really hit a lot of stat sheets. This defense can be chaos for QBs right now. And Jerry still has 4.5 sacks so he's contributing. His 10 sack years were on bad teams where he was pretty much the guy, and now he's a piece of the puzzle. You've got Ed Oliver now, Tremaine Edmunds, Jordan Phillips, Shaq Lawson, and then Jerry Hughes still picking up 5-6 sacks a season? That's scary. See, but everyone said the new additions should free up Hughes for more sacks, and it hasn't happened. So I'm not sure what to think about Hughes.

He's a perfect example of their Defense, which may be the best in the NFL, but only got one player named to the Pro Bowl roster. They do their 1/11th.
CoudyBills Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 Speculation from one of the beat guys on wgr yesterday is that he has a groin or something going on. Would explain lack of production. Dont quote me on the groin, could have been something else but think they said groin.
Rc2catch Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I could be wrong but shaq seems to be lining up a lot more in Hughes spot. And I could also be wrong but he looks like he gets a lot better pass rush from that side. I don’t know the exact snap counts or nothing though. I like the rotations on the line this year. Murphy has been the obvious weak link. Although he has made a few nice plays too. I have faith they are going to want to keep as much continuity as possible on the defense and just sprinkle in a couple new faces. They have stayed quite healthy so far and have really gelled as a unit. There should not be a ton of turnover. As others have said we have a pretty nice roster I would like to think this next offseason is looking to add 2-3 real impact players, and everything else mostly for depth and future replacements. We’re in great shape for this offseason.
Call_Of_Ktulu Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I'm not sure if he was playing with a injury the 1st 8 weeks or what. Right around the Dallas game it looks like he has his burst off the snap and speed back.

I’m not here to bash Jerry but the 2nd half of your post is 100% wrong. His 10 sack seasons came when he was playing opposite Mario Williams getting double digit sacks and had probowl DT’s Williams and dareus right next to him.
Drunken Pygmy Goat Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 He is still a good player. His stats do not reflect his play and effect on opposing offenses. What I have noticed, though, is some reluctance to "punish" the QB. It started back when Clay Matthews was getting those ticky-tack roughing the passer calls that made waves throughout the league. IIRC, Hughes made some sort of comment about that back then, and ever since then, I've noticed him "pull up" several times, just before I think he's going to deliver a hit on the QB. I don't necessarily view that as a bad thing. It certainly has had an impact on his sack numbers (he led the leauge in QB pressures last season, I believe, but few sacks). He has adjusted his game a bit to help avoid getting those penalties that Matthews was getting, while still creating pressure and forcing the issue on QBs. I haven't noticed him "losing a step" yet, and think he will be allowed to ride out the rest of his current deal/extension in Buffalo. 1
