His popularity was not in any of those, and in fact it was part popularity and part infamy.

Yes, he was involved in crime and was a gangster! Now we're getting hot!

 

The photo was definitely taken in 1923.

No, Capone was a stockier man with a pretty sizeable head. This infamous gangster was dapper... i.e. he was a snappy dresser.
