So, based on the profile and, I'm guessing, the 1950's era picture, I'm going with Ben Hogan. He was given a NYC ticker tape parade after his first and only British Open win (in his first and only British Open appearance).

So now I have to wonder... the question was earlier if he was an athlete... you you're saying he WAS an athlete, just not professionally?
