William S. Burroughs?

Burroughs would be correct. Guy lived quite a storied life... a lot of people are familiar with The Naked Lunch but he had quite a bit more out there than that.

Originally found him as a young kid listening to Nirvana.  Kurt Cobain use to rave about him.   Ended up a big fan, started with Naked Lunch but reading about his trips to Mexico and the William Tell accident were eye opening..   Crazy guy.   Junky is probably my favorite book by him.

Described in the "legacy" section could be when Cobain met him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Burroughs
