Shocked, yes SHOCKED I am, that the economy is SO bad that even innocent dogs and cats have to suffer for it!

Really, isn't that just a little bit of a stretch? "George W. Bush kills puppies and kittens!"?:doh:

I keep forgetting the republican method of if you can't defend something either change the subject or attack the messenger.

So, how is that different from the Democratic method?

Let's all joke about a $61B record trade deficit!

On the other hand, you'd think the trade deficit would stand on its own as an indictment of his economic policies without having to add "George Bush kills puppies and kittens".

You probably know that I'm no fan of Bush, and your point is taken, but 48% of that trade deficit increase can be directly attributed to the increase in the cost of oil (no link, I read it last night somewhere, but I'm sure that it can be googled).

There are numbers being released on Friday (by the DoC?) that will shed more light on the trade defiicit as it includes cash flows. I'll be intererested in seeing the foreign money coming in. I think it will probably show some record high levels. I also believe that it will show the begining of a trend whereby foreign loans will tighten and the fuel for the blank check policies of our fearless leader and his cohorts will slow to a relative trickle.

3 deviate from the real topic posts about my post. Nice.

Thanks for actually talking about the subject Campy. The control that opec has on oil prices is insane. They do not produce the majority of oil and all they ever do is talk about an increase or decrease of a small percentage which make prices go all over the board.

Last year $162 billion dollars left the US and landed in China (that was the trade surplus.) China is also the 2nd biggest holder of U.S. Treasuries (after Japan).

An interesting idea that Bush supports is turning old oil platforms in the ocean into fish farms. $7 billion in the overall trade deficit is from seafood. More US fish means a little less trade deficit and more jobs.

Without having a clue how much the conversion of turning derelict oil platforms into productive fish farms would cost or how it would be paid for (private funds plus subsidies I'd imagine), that idea isn't half bad. Provided it can be done at a reasonable ROI, that's actually a pretty good idea.

I think that the proper comparison should be to the industrialized western countries. Let's compare the key economic stats of our "peers" and then crow about economic policies.

I wanna pull a Sealand and find some derelict oil platform outside any nation's territorial waters and declare my own country
