Full 20 minute interview video in link-

Kind of a meta-comment

Has anyone else noticed that Josh seems to have the gift of drawing people to him and inspiring them to want to help and mentor him?

I was thinking about that when I heard an interview of Josh with Brett Favre and some of the things Brett wrote to him in the Athletic article.

Now here's Josh talking about how Jim Kelly has been an "open book" to him and let him pick his brain, had him to his house and his hunting lodge.  It was obvious from watching the byplay between the two that they're pretty comfortable with each other.  Jim has come out publically and supported Buffalo QB before but it seemed kind of strapped on, like "the Team asked me to do this so I'll read the script".  Now here they are, JA and JK, giving each other little bro slaps on the leg or shoulder, and Kelly saying "Oh, you're listening now...you're listening to your Uncle Jim!"  I have never heard anything like that before from Kelly.

I'm not sure what you call that as a personality trait.  I'm not sure "charisma" or "the IT factor" is exactly the right word for it.  But seems like Josh has it.

It appears our guy is growing up right before our eyes, It is good to feed off as many Greats as Jim is and was. I believe after all these years that we finally have our Franchise Quarterback of the futurel. As long as he keeps getting better and improving, the sky is the limit for this kid. I would love to see him become the next Brayd for the Bills. He has allot of talent and is well gifted.

Our prayers go out to this young man. Hope his dreams really do come true.

We love ya man. Now GO Bills. Hopefully we can win a couple more games this year.
As the schedule keeps getting harder. Think Positive my friend. THINK POSITIVE!

It is clear that Jim has not pushed himself on Josh as some have claimed.

Jim certainly made mistakes, some public, and gave some heart felt advice to Josh.

Don’t want to sound corny or anything but does anyone know how old Hunter Kelly would be this year? Maybe JA is the kind of kid JK would like to call a son...more so than his nephew Chad? Not sure. Anyway, great interview and glad they are bonding as NFL QB’s.

Hunter - born 2/14/97

Allen - born 5/21/96

Great interview. IMO, Allen (like Kelly was) is better in an uptempo offense. He seems to play more instinctively, gets into a better rhythm, and I think he has the mind for it. All year long, he has been pretty successful when operating out of the no huddle and against Miami, they ran it more extensively - and pretty successfully. I am hoping they continue that trend.

Probably too early to call it the "J Gun" (or maybe the "A Gun") but it kinda fits...

It can still be the K-Gun (since the original was K for Keith McKellar); we have Knox and Kroft!

Kroft would be K Gun but I don't think it should be stolen straight up.  It needs to be at least a little modified so name it after Knox and call it the "Silent K Gun".

It both bugs me and shows the connection that they have that he calls him "JK" instead of Jim.

I guess I'm just not used to hearing people calling him JK.

I am pretty sure this is just Josh being a Gen Z'er... they abbreviate everything!  Kids these days...

Hunter Kelly would be 23 years old this January.  Josh Allen was 23 years old last May.   Allen is certainly the right age to be "son-like" to Kelly.

I had that thought myself, that Jim must have at this point some longing to 'pass the torch' and while we don't know yet if Josh will be "the Man" in terms of QB skills, in terms of character, intelligence, and sheer physical abilities JA checks the boxes.

Ha.  Did you catch the part of the Brett Favre interview where Josh called him "sir" and he freaked a bit?  Then later the interviewer told Brett that when Allen was born, he was already a 3x all-pro, how does that make you feel?

Favre drawled "well, maybe he should call me sir"

I suspect that the culture Allen grew up with in Firebaugh is similar in some aspects to Southern/Midwestern culture.  It would be disrespectful for a young adult to call someone of their parents generation by their first name.  You can call them "Mr So and so" or if they have a position you call the by that position "Coach", but if invited it's OK to call them by a nickname or make them an honorary uncle or aunt.  So it's OK to call Coach Daboll "Dabs" or Jim Kelly "JK" but "Brian" or "Jim" would be disrespectful.  It both does and doesn't make sense.

And yeah, as someone else said, millenials do nickname everyone.

I have to admit ... I was critical of what I thought was the overabundance of time that JK was spending at the facility/with Josh Allen last year.  I perceived it as him just trying to hang on to his glory days and the Bills simply "being nice," and letting him hang around.

Now I feel like a dick for feeling that way.  I'm glad he's mentoring Allen and I think his presence has most definitely helped Josh with on-field performance, as well as handling himself like a pro when the pads are off.

I love reading these stories and seeing them interact.  Very, very cool.

Funny McKellar comes up here.  The experience Allen talks about with a player for the SF Giants letting him down as a kid, is similar to an experience I had with McKellar and J.D. Williams when I was a little kid.

I also caught hints that there may be some needed perspective/2nd viewpoint there from Kelly to Allen to NOT 100% take his coaches as gospel.  By inference, there had been a previous discussion between them where Allen told Kelly that at times, plays were coming in late and Kelly advised him "If the play is coming in late, just call your own play" and Allen was reluctant to take that advice - but now does have more freedom to make his own audibles and is willing at times to just call the play.  Albeit, calling a quick play to catch a 12-men penalty is one instance where no one in the organization will criticize him.  Other situations, much higher risk so he better be sure of the reward.

I personally think that late plays and delays in calling plays is one motivation for McDermott suggesting to Daboll that he move to the box, and either way, get the plays in on time!

Ironically, going by the original premise it would STILL be the K-Gun. It was originally aptly named not for Kelly, but for Keith McKeller. If we go by out current TE, Knox, one could argue its the return of the k-Gun.... just sayin:)
