Anybody watching Amazon Jack Ryan series?

I was just watching episode 6 of season 2 where they go into an office in Caracas, Venezuela posing as businessmen from Canada who want to set up a company there.  They say they’re in the coffee business and when the male receptionist asks for a name, Wendell Pierce, as James Greer, says “Timothy Horton.”  LOL!

Yep.  John Hoogenakker.  

 

My bet is Matice is the "John Clark" that's in the novels.

Haven't watched S2 yet.  I was planning on watching Jack Ryan and the final season of Man In The High Castle during the week of Thanksgiving

I noticed it was the Bud Light guy in S1 and whenever he killed someone or did something badass, I'd give him a Dilly Dilly!

Just finished streaming season two ... wasn't sure about Krasinski taking on a role that goes from desk jockey analyst to action man as well as Harrison Ford did, but he handles it excellently ... all in on season three, whenever that might be.  Now I guess we'll have to pay for Showtime and get back into Ray Donovan

Just finished season 2.   

 

Love the show, but hope they get a better script for season 3.    The plot holes and laugh out loud moments (if you're familiar with the characters in the books) were pretty bad, IMO.   Krasinski and Pierce do a great job, so its an enjoyable series.    But IMO, they're very different from the Ryan and Greer that Clancy brought to life...

I enjoyed Clancy's novels back in the day when there was still a USSR to hate/fear/whatever, and it all seemed relevant.

When all that went away, I found it very hard to get into the world of Jack Ryan and the this type of storytelling.

Compelling stories rely on compelling villains.  America hasn't had much in the way of compelling villains since the fall of the USSR.  Sure there's terrorism but that's kind of nebulous, especially in the 8+ years since bin Laden punched his ticket to hell.

Just started watching it last night, so far it seems like it will be pretty good.

Finished it this weekend — have a lot to say about it. Thought season 2 was much improved from season 1, more confident, better action, great cast. All in all, it was very enjoyable for me. 
 

A couple things irked me:

1) the (not surprising) flip of the political realities on the ground in Venezuela (the baddie president is a nationalist! The hero is a socialist!)

 

2) The dumping of Dr.Ryan makes me wonder why they bothered to introduce her in season 1. (Will talk more about the character changes in a few)

 

3) Uber’s “big” decision that sets up the story for the troops in the jungle was.... highly unmotivated and just seemed off. Same w the end of the season (no spoilers) when Jack make a VERY off character decision in the palace. 
 

overall though, if you like Clancy’s universe it’s worth the time.

I would be willing to bet that was the intent in Season 1. But this season they make it clear he’s not. 

I think this is because they’re about to release Without Remorse as a movie where Clark is played by Michael B Jordan (which I love the casting choice) — so I think the show got waved off from introducing Clark. Especially because they’re rebooting Clark’s background and story. 
 

That’s me guessing, I don’t know for sure.

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying here, especially the last bit. The changes to Greer specifically (in season 1) seemed really unnecessary to me, but I forgave it knowing how Hollywood works these days. 
 

But season 2 they changed two core factors of Ryan’s character (he’s now a playboy/bond like w women rather than a married man, and he’s an action hero now rather than an academic who is forced to fight every now and then). 
 

I really wonder why they didn’t just call this Jack Ryan Jr — since they’ve made him essentially the same character as his son from the spin off series. Had they done that, none of this would be an issue.

Respectfully, the spook world didn’t end w the cold war. Especially in the time we are living in right now, where we are literally seeing how deeply rooted the spook world is with the Beltway’s activities, it’s highly relevant imo

I caught that reference as well... I had to explain it to my wife who didn't make that connection either.

 

This is a very good show but jumps back and fourth quite a lot this season.  I thought it would flow better if they kept the threads followed per episode to a minimum.  This show was also brought up in the netflix thread.
