The Chief Justice has no such power — the Senate has the sole power to try impeachments, the Chief just presides — and its exercise would delegitimize the whole affair. Were the Chief to “recuse” — I suppose Tribe really means “disqualify” — Trump supporters for bias, he’d set the stage for Trump ignoring the whole thing as illegitimate, and Trump would have a strong basis for doing so. If I understand it correctly, the Chief Justice acts somewhat like the on-staff Attorney for the School Board or City Council during the 'trial'. When asked, they are there to offer legal commentary regarding the proceedings just to make sure that the Senators are staying within loose guardrails of legality...and I assume mostly so that Senators don't do or say something that would get themselves into their own legal jeopardy.
