Most doctors will send you to a dermatologist if you have a mole, let alone some strange growth on your head that's been growing for 6 years.

And it’s possible they did and he blew it off or that this presents eerily similar to something common and is rare itself... but on the surface, yup, exactly my thought

I am familiar with DFSP.  They are very rare and can resemble something benign like a cyst but are malignant.  They can fool dermatologists let alone a team GP.   They may require an extensive surgery and can metastasize if  not treated.

I can't begin to imagine how the Redskins' staff dermatologist could have possibly misdiagnosed this.

They're idiots?

Changes our perception on that holdout. That's unfortunate for Trent.

Big time changes the perception. The media and court of public opinion once again weighed in long before any facts about the case were released. Sounds about on cue for today's society.

Wait a second. When you say "they knew about this for five years" are you suggesting the Skins knew it was cancer and kept him in the dark?

What I'm saying is that he had a legitimate gripe. Team doctors did not complete due diligence on this and overlooked or misdiagnosed his condition until it got serious enough to cause lifelong problems. He continually said he did not trust the teams medical staff anymore and that started this year,  so it is apparent that over the last few years he must have gone to them with this problem and they seem to have told him to not worry about it. These guys trust that the NFL is providing them with the very best medical care, especially in a multi-billion dollar business that demands the best of the best. So I can understand why he immediately didn't go outside for other opinions. During the off-season he must have finally decided that it was a problem he had to deal with and then discovered the severity of the situation. I'd love to hear more of this whole story and get to all the facts and the timeline of the events. But we know for sure, it has been going on for awhile.

Here is the link to why Trent was so pissed at the Skins medical staff.

http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/0ap3000001071692/article/trent-williams-says-he-had-cancerous-growth-removed

If I were him I would have done the same.  They knew about this for five years and if it went longer, he could have died or had very serious complications.  Team medical staffs are a very important part of the organization and I think we as fans underestimate the trauma that these guys may go through. Instead everyone is concentrated on the money they make and the performance they have on the field.

We forget that these are men with wives, kids and parents who depend on them, love them and need them. I think society in general has lost its touch with humanity and wants to continually judge performance and value it over relationship.  That's kind of sad.

head trauma didn't cause his cancer.

That said if the doctors knew then there should be a serious lawsuit over this.

No one said or mentioned anything about head trauma causing it and who knows, maybe there are lawsuits coming. It's obvious Trent is working the system to get his checks after the team failed to trade him.  We will see what develops. It may have ramifications across the league.

he’s probably less worried about the game checks and more worried about ensuring his contract year doesn’t get tolled, to be honest. To even attempt to paint this guy as greedy after what Washington and their staff put him through is straight garbage, sorry.

According to reports (which, admittedly, may be biased) this particular rare cancer was weeks away from reaching his brain. I support any and all efforts by Trent Williams to burn that franchise to the ground. Snyder and his operation are at this point actively harming the reputation of the NFL and he should be forced to sell.

I really believe that Doctors tend to stereotype people.  They look at a person, and decide what the problem may be based on age, gender, race etc.  If Trent was too young to statistically have that tumor, or if it was very rare for his gender/race etc., they would never look for it.

My wife almost died of a ruptured appendix because she was misdiagnosed in the ER with Crohn's.   After many days, when her white cell blood count was off the charts, they decided to operate, and found the ruptured appendix.  They seemed to believe that A white female 60 yrs old should not have had that, so she was never examined or asked about that.

Confuscious say "Man who jump to conclusion sometime land in sea of deception.".

You may have insider knowledge unavailable to me, and for all I know TW is one hundred percent accurate in what he says.  However, given the very limited information available, all I really know is there is a football player engaged in a contract dispute with the team, who seems unhappy with his current situation, is complaining about medical services provided and level of care extended where he had a major health scare. We know the medical team will not offer a statement confirming or denying what he said because they cannot.  We don't know that a doc didn't tell him to have his condition checked out by a specialist, if he simply ignored the guidance provided or if they incorrectly diagnosed anything.

Whatever happened, let's hope he recovers fully.

Looks like he has every reason to act in the fashion he has, these players rely on the medical staff to have their best interests healthcare wise as a number one priority. Looks like the medical staff on the skins is sh-t, just like the owner.

The older and wiser I get, the less I trust doctors.

There's a reason I only sign up for PPOs.  I don't need an overworked PCP telling me something is nothing and refusing to give me a referral for years for something that'll kill me.  I can decide to see a specialist all on my own.  My sister-in-law has been waiting years for a referral to a pulmonologist for COPD - at this rate, she'll get one when she dies.

I would be entirely unsurprised if sports medicine staff on football teams did the same.  Particularly as they're specialists in sports medicine, and not oncologists.  And are responsible to the team and not the players, and have a primary goal of getting players on the field even if they have to hand out opioids like candy to do it.  Williams is a mammoth idiot to think a drug-pushing staff orthopedist is going to refer him for anything.

My wife had her appendix out a few years ago. She had been in and out of doctors offices and emergency rooms for a couple years with terrible pain. Late one night we’re in for an emergency appendectomy. The surgeon comes out post surgery and says “well, that wasn’t it. Perfectly healthy appendix.”

It turns out that once they removed the 3 tennis ball size degenerative fibroids a couple years later that they had long been aware of, the pain went away. Go figure! That was like the 5th doctor, and the only one with any common sense. In the meantime, they had referred her to an oncologist regarding something on her pancreas.  The oncologist couldn’t work her in for more than 2 months....for possible pancreatic cancer. WTF?

The doctor with a functioning brain who fixed her problems responded to questions about the pancreas with “How long has it been since they found this?” She told him it was over a year and he said “oh no, if that was it you’d be dead by now”. GREAT!

My wife’s family is mostly doctors, so I give them a a pass because they are family. BUT, in general I am NOT a fan of doctors because they act and charge as though they know everything, and for the most part they are just pompous windbags who are guessing more often than not.

Rant over.

You just agreed with a post that basically stated that years of experience has led to your distrust of doctors, so Williams is now a "mammoth idiot" for what, not being as old as you? He's retroactively an idiot because you in your old age have figured out that doctors are drug pushers? What an insane comment. Williams is not out of bounds for trusting his multi-million dollar medical staff.
