I’m offended AND angry for sports fans from my beloved WNY. They’re the Only thing you have and it’s just so goddam bad. It’s like a daily competition from show to show to see who can be most amateur, unenlightened and unlistenable. Yet, they act like they’re Top 5 nationwide and absolute authorities on sports.. Sal & Schelp are just 2 of the dummies masquerading as sports announcers. It’s just so embarrassing. I bleed for you all.? I like sal though 1

I'd appreciate it if comments are limited in scope, more or less, to the linked exchange. Really sounds like much a do about nothing to me Schopp doesnt want to give them credit ] Sal is saying they are 5 and 2 1

Loved how right after he let Sal off the air, he asked Bulldog if he thought the Bills were a better team, looking for support. BD didn't really back him up. Schopp cannot stand being wrong because he's in MENSA or whatever. When it comes to sports, he is pretty clueless. Just asking but when did Schopp ever mention that he was in MENSA. That would explain ALOT about him regarding his smug attitude. My biggest gripe with him was the way he acts like he is a elitist and the negative way he way he treats most callers.

I don’t think he played a sport in his life. He couldn’t carry Sal’s jockstrap. That's the thing, just because someone played sports, it does not give them some kind of leg up on those who did not. Belichick wins with strategy and intelligence during games as well as during the off season, has nothing to do with some knucklehead notion that you have had to have played sports to be any good at running a sports team, a very prevalent yet ignorant take.
Phil The Thrill Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 There obviously is some tension between. McDermott and Schopp. If you remember, last year he basically hung up on Schopp. Mike was off-air the next two segments, obviously talking to someone - either McDermott, Derek Boyko or someone from the station. This season, McDermott chose not to do his regular interview segment with Schopp. Instead he speaks to Howard and Jeremy on Friday. I have always thought that this was pretty telling. 1

McDermott is unwilling answer tough questions, it's that simple. I get the impression that for McDermott, questioning the way he runs a football team is akin to questioning his faith in his religion, it's blasphemous. 2 1

I agree but your example of Belichick is flawed. How did Belichick develop such “intelligence?” It wasn’t because he used to play college football was it?

Rock head ex-football players who get jobs like coaching or color analyst usually flame out or are seriously bad at their jobs, there are so many examples of both. Now, I imagine playing at some point in your life would have helped develop the passion and could lead one in that direction, however I don't think it is a mandatory prerequisite to success (like it seems many fans mistakenly believe, "if you've never played organized sports you have no clue" caveman mentality). I disagree with the "if you've never played organized sports you have no clue" mentality. But some of the longest-tenured coaches in NFL history are former players.

I'm going to guess most of them are not former NFL players. Now high school and college, yeah, I mean passion usually starts with experiencing something. Edited October 31, 2019 by Seven-N-Nine

I can't say I am a fan of his attitude, but Schopp has been right more than wrong the last ~17 years. Can't say that about most Bills fans.

To know and not to do, is not to know. You don't have to have played football to be a part of the radio coverage for a team, but it would help. Mike lives in the world of symbols (stats), the actual real thing doesn't matter as much. Like previously mentioned there is no stat for culture so it's not real or relevant to his super-smart brain. Also team culture is the most important thing, IMO.

McDermott's culture is not showing up in games against quality opponents however. If that trend continues, the culture will break down, it cannot last.

This is why to McDermott, it is so important to get process guys, it takes them longer to lose faith, they don't question the preacher, etc. Culture in lieu of talent = losing IMO.
