The Browns have self-destructed (Les Propheties by Fergydamus)

Supposedly a real man cuts his own lawn.

Idk just heard it somewhere

But a REAL, real man cuts his own facial hair! Often, and sometimes several times a day in several different fashions, because he knows what’s really important.

I was shocked at the media fawning over the Browns and giving them the conference title before the regular season even started.  I even complained about it here.  So yeah, I'll admit to taking satisfaction in watching them crash and burn.  Too many egos, not enough culture and leadership.  Talent isn't everything.

Interesting column in The Athletic from their Cleveland Browns reporter (Tim Graham is listed as a contributor to the piece):

Reed: Browns should look to Buffalo for answers after latest house cleaning

BEREA, Ohio — Two weeks ago, while researching a story on the five remaining Browns players from the inglorious 1-31 era, I ran across a stat that threw me for a loss quicker than a Freddie Kitchens-designed shovel pass.

My assumption was no NFL franchise could possibly have fewer holdovers from the 2016 season than the Browns. Not only does such a squad exist, but it’s headed back to the playoffs for the second time in three years.

The Buffalo Bills shared a similar legacy of losing with the Browns from 1999 — when Cleveland returned to the league — until the start of the 2017 season. The Bills, much like their Lake Erie brethren, have turned over an entire roster save for defenders Jerry Hughes, Shaq Lawson and Lorenzo Alexander.

Unlike the Browns, the Bills have not:

• Compiled an 0-16 record in a season for just the second time in NFL history.

• Witnessed a fan-driven parade that snaked around its stadium in mocking tribute to its bumbling ownership.

• Fired a coach or general manager.

• Released a player for sending threatening Twitter messages to fans after a loss and had another player asked by the league to remove his clown-themed cleats … in the same game.

• Drafted anyone as remotely bad as Corey Coleman in the first round.

...

The Bills, who face the Texans on Saturday, are not bonafide title contenders yet. They are, however, trending in the right direction and establishing continuity and culture that are woefully lacking in Berea.

What can the Browns learn from the Bills’ rise to respectability? Let’s examine several factors:

He then goes into the following factors:

- "You don't have to game the system to assemble a decent team," basically saying that you don't have to tank.

- "Don’t use a high draft pick on a quarterback if you can’t protect him within two seasons," self-explanatory, the Browns pass pro sucks, with a comp between Allen and Mayfield re: second-year progress (Allen trending up, Mayfield trending down).

- "Make sure your most important decision-makers and players are on the same page," outlining the power struggles and personality mismatches at the top of the Browns org charts (Kitchens/Monken, Jackson/Haley, Dorsey/Depodesta) and comparing it to the buttoned-up look and feel of the Bills w/r/t press conferences and common goals of McD/Beane.

- "You can’t win without talent, but talent absent character and leadership is asking for trouble," talking about the big personalities and absence of veteran leadership on the Browns vs. the culture in the locker room in Buffalo with "low-wattage" stars like Frank Gore, John Brown, and Cole Beasley and jettisoning Dareus and McCoy.  References JA17's habit of wearing suits on the road during media time.

Closes like this:

These finer points haven’t produced a win over the Patriots or guaranteed them on-field success, but the Bills act and sound like a group of players pulling in the same direction, bereft of agendas.

Buffalo still lacks the offensive firepower and experience to make a deep playoff run. The season could easily end Sunday in Houston.

But after years of losing, the Bills are positioning themselves for sustained success. And they never had to tank a season or two to achieve it.

Nothing changes in Berea until the Haslams commit to a plan and get the right leadership in place. There’s little in their history of ownership that suggests they can turn it around, especially with their notorious reputation of quick hooks and bad hires.

Everyone wants to be the next Patriots or Ravens, the organizations with “championship-level” pedigree. Here’s an idea: Why not take the first step and become the next Bills.

17 year playoff drought

I said this in another thread - I just do not understand why Buffalo got to be the butt of every joke, but Cleveland that has now matched the streak and compiled a significantly worse record during that time - skated by.

I always hate to wish ill will on another fan base, but I hope for our sake this goes at least one more year - so Cleveland can own it.

But, but, but....it’s not the talent, it’s the coach and GM. With OBJ, Landry and Mayfield, a coach can teach them how to be humble and buy into the process.

And it was just a few months ago where more than a few were pining for the off-season moves of the Browns.

Yep. Right now OBJ and Landry are scouring the jewelry store for diamond clad cleats and some insurance company is throwing money at the little QB....rather than prepping for a playoff game.

They could hire a new coach, but can it really change under the same owner? HE is the problem, and I doubt the top coaches want any part of that dumpster fire.
