WhoTom Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 (edited) Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter died last night. "Let there be songs to fill the air." Edited September 24, 2019 by WhoTom 3 4
row_33 Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 (edited) how the heck did he live this long? and he worked with Jerry (mostly) and can't be blamed for those inferior Bob songs that never seemed to end... Edited September 24, 2019 by row_33
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Studio... Version but how much closer to a live vibe can you get! In collaboration with Garcia and Kruetzmann... Some of the best lyrics ever written... Deep... "In another time's forgotten space Your eyes looked through your mother's face Wildflower seed on the sand and stone May the four winds blow you safely home Roll away, the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew I'll tell you where the four winds dwell In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell It can ring, turn night to day It can ring like fire when you lose your way Roll away, the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew God save the child who rings that bell I may have one good ring baby, you can't tell One watch by night, one watch by day If you get confused just listen to the music play Some come to laugh their past away Some come to make it just one more day Whichever way your pleasure tends If you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind Roll away, the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew I'll tell you where the four winds sleep Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep Wildflower seed in the sand and wind May the four winds blow you home again Roll away, the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew Roll away, roll away the dew" 3
T&C Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Hunter and Sinfield were the greatest writers associated with a band that they didn't actually play in imo. RIP man... the memories will live on forever.
gomper Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 His lyrics will live forever. He articulated everything I was feeling but couldn't put words to. RIP Robert. Thank you for everything.

Seasons1992 Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Bummer, he was the silent genius behind the great Dead songs. RIP. 1
Buddo Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Sad day - he was incredibly gifted, with the ability to leave things open ended enough, to let people interpret his songs in a number of ways, to suit their own circumstances. 2 1

Buddo Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Bird Song, would be a personal favourite not already mentioned. Box of Rain, another awesome song. He was able to do all types, sad stuff like China Doll, Stella Blue, to the bizarre of China Cat. The hilarious Tennessee Jed, with the drunken cadence to match the lyrics. Uncle John's Band - yet another favourite. The list could go on for a fair old time. It's about time I listened to some more of his stuff. 1
B-Man Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Hunter was the Grateful Dead’s main lyricist. Terrapin Station. Dark Star. Jack Straw. Ripple. St. Stephen. Sugaree China Cat Sunflower. I Know You Rider. Eyes of the World. Playing in the Band. R.I.P. .

Bill from NYC Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 This is horrible, devastating news. May God rest the soul of this genius.
