1.  You said he’s not destined for Canton. Probably true, but too soon to tell.

2.  Last weak he was Clear Leader, a word play on Kim Jung Un who is Dear Leader.  Very clever.  This week, he’s Fearless Leader, which may be true, but not as fun.

Great writeup. I just like to find minutia to quibble with.

First person to link Billy Joel: I hope you vomit through your nose in a parking lot

I actually just titled it "Allen Town," from the cool area in Buffalo, and what I have on a tee-shirt I bought last year. The headlines are written by someone else.

" What's the matter with the songs he's singin'
Can't you tell that they're pretty lame
After listenin' to a couple albums
Well, they all start to sound the same

So he tried to change his musical style
He tossed all his ballads in the circular file
Then he found the punk sound
Breakin' ground all around
It's still Billy Joel to me"

Pick your nits! ;) I will pick one with you, how is he not destined to Canton yet, unless you think it is already determined he is not.

I'll pick a nit:

He had a defensive HC, inexperienced OC, a WR coach as QB coach, and Nathan Peterman as veteran QB guru. We had no line, WR, TE, blocking or run game.

Would rather have seen "He" or "The Bills" there for consistency. I know this is a homer column but I'm not actually on the team. I try to refrain from that on the forums myself until I get a contract from Pegula :D

“Do not get me wrong. Allen is not infallible; not destined for Canton, or even the Pro Bowl.”

I was referencing you, and I’m saying it’s too soon to tell, but maybe I misinterpreted your meaning.

Maybe something like "it's too soon to carve a bust for Canton or reserve a ticket for Hawaii?"

That's a good nit to pick. I missed that. Thanks. I try not to say "we" when writing, here or even in conversations with other fans but it often sneaks out. I think fans waffle between the "they" and "we" perspective all the time. You're absolutely right though, we should stick to one or the other.

Yeah, I was saying his success is not assured.

That would have been better. ;)

Yeah, there a vagueness in the phrasing where people may parse it as implying Allen is not ever going to the Pro Bowl or HoF. Within the context of the rest of the article it's easy enough to infer that we're talking about the singular point in time of Week 3 in the 2019 NFL Season. But anything can and will be lifted from context in the current year. No slam on Gray Beard; it's a fair question to ask for a qualification on that line.

Laddie, don't ye think ye should... rephrase that?

Within the context of the rest of the article it's easy enough to infer that we're talking about the singular point in time of Week 3 in the 2019 NFL Season, if you're smarter than the average bear. I try never to assume that, owing to countless disappointments.

I would imagine that he is not "destined" to be there is implicit, and keeps it from implying that he is not ever going, but it is always a good strategy to be specific versus vague.

Oh, it's a trap. For instance, in the quote above: you quoted me before I edited it, because upon re-reading it sounded like I was implying Gray Beard wasn't smarter than the average bear, when the thought had never crossed my mind in a stream-of-consciousness. Then after seeing it, I felt like a total Richard. It's nice to have the edit function... if you're fast enough ?

I don't like the article because I don't know what Settlers of Catan is. I Google it and I still have no idea.

Seriously though, another good job, Pete.

Ha.

Thx. Settlers of Catan is a great board game, very entertaining to play with a bunch of people. It's been around for some time and becoming more popular lately for some reason. The column is educational! ;)

I did that once in a Burger King parking lot after a Hatebreed show. I don't recommend it. I also don't recommend riding an hour in a sh*tbox old van that circulates a horrible exhaust smell that makes you yell, "Pull over!" only to be met with, "We aren't stopping for food!" and then, "I don't want any f'n food but if you want the back of your van to stay barf-free, pull over." And then when I walked back to the van I was asked, "Did everything come out okay?" Jerks.

This all feels so weird. Can it be real?

It is until it is not. ;) That is kind of the point, we should all enjoy what is going on now, while it is really good, even if it changes ten different times over the next several years. This is fun, and the ceiling is in the stratosphere. Again, it is not guaranteed, but it's possible. Being optimistic at this point makes your day and week and life a tad better.

This.

Yes it's just two game against inferior talent. So I don't make TOO much of it. I'm not saying they're a top 10 team.  But man, if you can't enjoy/appreciate being 2-0 and seeing obvious growth in the QB/OL and WR positions, I question if you really are a fan.

Yup. What I like is some of the contrasts. Like he comes across as a simple, nice, almost goofy guy. And then on the field he's a quarterback who shoves linebackers to the field with a vicious forearm. He's a hero ball guy but he is winning with short darts. He's only started 13 or so games but he seems to play better in the clutch like a veteran. Plus I don't think people realize how terrible his teammates on offense were last year.

Excellent article. I'll admit, there were two things I didn't like but both were already discussed. 1) He's not heading to Canton or the pro bowl. I was 100% sure I knew you meant "yet" but didn't feel that's what you said. If read from the perspective of an unbiased writer, I may have thought you meant "ever" but of course this is a "Fan Perspective". And 2) the "we" statement. Of course, easy to critique, far far better than I'd have done. And, I loved the title even if you only wrote half of it.
