Discussion about the commercials when the game comes back on? Still confident. Friend texting about ending the "wide right" curse during the 3rd quarter? I'm in, let's talk about it. Today, I felt like the team has gotten good enough that I can relax and have faith that they know what they are doing and have the skill to win or at least not beat themselves. My family hung out and watched the game with me, cheering out of actual appreciation, rather than empathy and we all had fun watching the Bills play at a high level and make the city of Buffalo, and our many fans throughout the globe, proud. I am hoping this lasts, because the feeling of confidence during a game, definitely makes the game more enjoyable. GO BILLS! The best part is I didn't once have to hear or think "billeve." But I really need to see us smoke the Patriots. I despise them and Brown and all the BS surrounding them. I don't want, I need to see us kick them into second place. It's time. The Patriots look great so far, we need to adjust their reality. Let me first preface this with a knock on the ole' proverbial wood there. This just feels like a different team now. And it's not just because of the players or the management or the coaching. It's each of those and all of those together. It's hard to recall when I've had this feeling about the Bills in the last 3 decades. It's a daggone nice feeling though! Example: Right after the D got gashed on the Gints opening drive, they said McD called the D together and got their heads right back in the game. He said something like "You still got this just stay disciplined and stay in your lanes. Don't panic." You see what effect that had. Those boys shut it down for nearly the rest of the game. I was thoroughly impressed to say the least. But it could have been so different (like any year under Gailey - no offense Chan but your D's were all very suspect). Not all games are going to go like this but you have to admit the D's whole game after that first drive was very un-Billsy, at least unlike previous Bills teams going back like 30 years. I hope we can smoke the Patriots but I'm not sure we're that good yet. McD has fostered a winning culture in the locker room and the team has responded. The scary thing is we have a lot of things to clean up still (primarily on offense) but you can see the makings of a dominant team coming together. That is why games are different for me. More than one time, on 3rd and 10, I just said, "OK, no problem. Josh will pick this up." And he did. Backed up to the 2 yard line? No problem. It's been a long time since I had this kind of confidence in a Bills offense... and it's because he's doing what the Pats*** have always done - made it look easy. Josh is out there just making it look easy. I've got my hopes up plenty of other times... this one just feels different. A couple years ago my son and I were watching a game in my house and my wife came home and walked into the room all cheery like "What's the score?" - at that moment in a particularly tense game something really bad happened for the Bills, and in unison my son and I screamed at her "Get Out! You're Bad Luck!" and at first she kind of smiled like ha ha, then realized we were totally serious. I'll never forget the look on her face as she was banished from the room. Now it's a running joke in our house if we're watching together in the room and something bad happens we tell her to leave. Before Sunday Ticket I used to drag my kids to games at restaurants with Satellite every Sunday - literally from the time they were babies. My kids have grown up unwavering Bills fans in non-Bills country, even as the team has sucked basically their entire life (they are 21). On more than one occasion after an especially brutal loss in my state of misery I've apologized to them for having brought this fate upon them. Recently my son confided to me that after the Bills beat the Bengals to finally make it to the playoffs basically for the first time in his lifetime - he was in the shower and all the years of despair and loyalty and disappointment washed over him and he literally started crying - not just because he was so happy for himself but also for me and his Grandpa. The best part of gameday now for me is texting with my son during the game. No matter where he ends up in life I know we'll always have that connection every Sunday during football season. I have to keep looking at the Bills logo on their helmets over and over again to believe it's really our team out there. They just look different with JA at the helm. All of them. Even when he's at the podium post-game taking question in front of all those Bills logos. It's like my mind refuses to believe that this scrappy up-and-coming team I'm watching is the same old hapless Bills I've been suffering with for all these very long years.
