buffaloboyinATL Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 Please excuse my LAMP moment, not normally my style, but worth it today. It was a great day for football today, and to me, this game just felt different. It was my birthday today and my family, wife, daughter (10) and 2 sons( 16,17) hung out with me watching the game. Normally, they check in with me throughout the game, listen to my excuses as to why I think we are playing better than the score reflects, feign interest, and go on with their day. But today, they actually watched the game and got excited about how well the Bills were actually playing. No faking to keep me happy, they were generally enjoying the heroics displayed by Josh Allen and company and cheering for the Bills. But much more than that, I was able to push through one superstition after another, things that I used to blame for the team losing their momentum, without getting nervous or losing confidence. Kids coming and going during the game? No problem. Son side tracking the conversation from the game to something he heard at school? Unfazed. Discussion about the commercials when the game comes back on? Still confident. Friend texting about ending the "wide right" curse during the 3rd quarter? I'm in, let's talk about it. Today, I felt like the team has gotten good enough that I can relax and have faith that they know what they are doing and have the skill to win or at least not beat themselves. My family hung out and watched the game with me, cheering out of actual appreciation, rather than empathy and we all had fun watching the Bills play at a high level and make the city of Buffalo, and our many fans throughout the globe, proud. I am hoping this lasts, because the feeling of confidence during a game, definitely makes the game more enjoyable. GO BILLS! 23 6 2

"No faking to keep me happy" in the context of being a Bills fan is hysterical! HB, a good one to be sure. 1
Shaw66 Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 Yes. Last week felt different, too, but this week even more so, because it wasn't marred with INTs and fumbles. Giants cruised down the field to open the game, and I thought "okay." Not "damn!" Not "oh, no." Just "okay, it's a long game." Then it started to happen, the offense lit up, the defense lit up, and we saw a good football team, executing. Lovely. 6 1

Sounds like you have historically had all the same superstitions as me. It’s also like the Bills have been so bad over the years that it has required total focus and silence to watch the games. 1 1
Drunken Pygmy Goat Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 (edited) Happy Birthday! Worthy of the LAMP Edited September 16, 2019 by Drunken Pygmy Goat 1
VW82 Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 (edited) I suspect that your improved behaviour was a big reason the family stuck around for this one. Being a well behaved Bills fan has been a tall order these last twenty years but it's an important part of the deal for our loved ones. Edited September 16, 2019 by VW82 1 1
Buffalo Barbarian Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 My wife actually watched with me and did here sarcastic best to root on the BILLS, its not much but usually its b!tc#ing about the game and football in general. 1
US Egg Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 It just felt different today..... So more alcohol consumption ?
Inigo Montoya Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 (edited) Things are different this year. We have an elite defense and a real NFL offense. Josh is continuing to improve every game. They look like a playoff team. Edited September 16, 2019 by Inigo Montoya

Strange but true. 1

Its my birthday today too. Big 50? Last time we had one on a game day EJ led us on a game winning drive to beat the Panthers. We have clearly turned a corner as an organization ? 2 1

Andy1 Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 (edited) The ability of this offense to string together many plays and march down a long field IS different. In previous years, we rarely could overcome a10 yd holding penalty. We needed big chunk plays to move down the field. Not today. Their confidence is soaring. This is different! Nick the Greek Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 For me it feels different because people don’t seem to be over joyed. We we took care of business, and that’s it. It’s an odd feeling for a Bills fan. 1
SinceThe70s Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 Happy Birthday! Glad to hear that you had a good day with the fam. My boys are 16 and 13 and both Bills fans - worth mentioning since we're not from Buffalo. Anyways, what we all see is a competitive NFL team with a promising QB. Good times! Go Bills! 1

This is the first year I don't make make my kids pose in weird stances to bring good luck on Bills drives. I just have confidence in our ability and I don't need to pray for luck. It is not a wing and a prayer, more like talent and cohesiveness. 1
