Had a couple disappear driving from San Jose to San Francisco on a Friday evening on Route 101 (10 lanes).  The whole area is heavily developed.  Cops searched for a few days and finally someone spotted a car had run off the road into a very marshy and weedy area. At least 10k cars passed by that spot.  They found the couple drowned in the front seat of their submerged car.

They should cover "submerged car escape" in drivers education.

Am I supposed to see a car in that googlemaps ariel view?  Is it one of those things you have to stare at in a certain way?

Don’t know why, but when I clicked on google maps link in OP, I don’t see this. Hmmm...

It sure does seem more clear in the more recent version. I’m with you on that.

maybe the water level is lower this year?

It's likely.   Water levels in retention ponds go up and down every year, especially if don't have a liner to prevent draining into the sand below.

I agree with posters saying he drove straight through the stop sign into the pond.  Probably fell asleep and ker-splash...

There was a similar case some years back in Seattle. A woman mysteriously vanished. Her car somehow slid off the Floating bridge and she remained submerged for quite awhile.
