If it was a criminal case and he could not buy his way out of it as easily, they might be forced to release him. In this case, if The Pats want to keep him they guaranteed his rights to themselves by offering 20M, BUT its unlikely they would want to pay that much to him bc market value is going to be lower, so they can either keep him at slightly above market for a year or leverage the fact he can't go anywhere to force him to take a short term deal for reasonable money. No sane player would give up their rights like that. Being foolish/desperate for "guaranteed" money, which he didn't get, by the way, led to this.

This is a one year prove it deal, the Pats could have made it two years with no guarantees. But the option is actually better for the player and the club. 1) Player gets to know early in league year whether he is apart of club or not..no getting cut week before the season(assume there are some guarantees with the option) 2) Club gets compensatory compensation if they move on Bills had several of these types of 1 year deals with FA's this year, this structure may be better way to go Edited September 11, 2019 by plenzmd1
