gantrules Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I played in a slow pitch league for a couple years before I left Buffalo. Everytime one of those guys came up to bat with their $300 bat, batting gloves, offical MLB pants and sports goggles on, we would laugh our asses off. 297175 This is why I play basketball year round. Can't alter that game. I just don't get softball.

bills_fan Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I've been playing in various leagues for years. Let me tell you something....those bats should be taken off the market. The ball is hit too hard. I've seen guys, good players mind you, at 3B, have their faces shattered in tournament play by those bats. The team using them was DQ'd when the ref realized what was going on, but it didn't help the 2 guys who were sent to the hospital.
SDS Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 Well, after thinking it over - I took Pete's advice and picked out a real screamer. I got the Manhattan Projectile... It is a titanium based, quadruple walled alloy with a uranium core. Generate the slightest amount of bat speed and the accelerometer will trigger a small nuclear reaction and that imparts 150,000 Newtons to that poor softball. Some softballs have been known to vaporize on contact. I can only IMAGINE the tail I'm going to get when those diamond rats see me jacking those balls out swinging left handed (I'm a righty). BOO-YA!!!! (In all seriousness, I got the DeMarini Rayzor double-walled for $99.99 at Dicks. The single wall was available for $10 less, but apparently you have to be related to Ozzy Osbourne to buy that bat considering the Goth lettering on it.)

The double wall will make a ton of difference for 10 bucks more and anything more than that (triple walls..etc...) need to be hit EXACTLY right to generate anything special out of them.

I take it only the double-wall came in hot pink, girly-man?

I think the wrapper was made of velvetta it looked so cheesy.
elcrusho Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I had a blue softball back 2 years ago, nad I bent it when I hit a triple
MattyT Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Check out a Play It Again Sports. You're near Baltimore right? http://www.playitagainsports.com/franchise...ise.asp?ID=1593 Pick up a few that look good and choose the one in your price range that feels the best in your hands. No muss, no fuss. Unless you need a shiny new piece of steel to pound the crap out of a hunk of leather and string.
Campy Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 This is why I play basketball year round. Can't alter that game. I just don't get softball. 297196 The way the game has been altered is the reason I no longer watch (or play) basketball. I'm not attacking you but IMO the changes ruined basketball.
MDH Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 and if you use one - consider yourself a pink panty wearing p****. BTW - YOU aren't hitting bombs with those - the bat is. I guess in the age of Viagra any artifical means up pumping up one's manhood is "money well spent". Go get 'em tiger. You da bomb. 297022 So I suppose you don't use or approve of new golf balls, graphite tennis rackets or any new technology that has been brought into the sports world (or any other area for that matter)? In fact, just the other day I believe you were spotted riding down the street in a horse drawn carriage...don't you know, the new horseless carriages have arrived!

Alaska Darin Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I was trying to look for info on the: DeMarini 2005 Ultimate Weapon Singlewall... It's $99. Which still seems outrageous, but I don't want to dent a cheap one either. My current 10 year old Louisville Slugger chatters my teeth with every swing. My hands hurt so bad after BP I need ibuprofen. 297046 Because your bat is dead. They aren't meant to last that long. I actually sat through a seminar once with TPS (the company, not the guy) where they explained the technology. It was really something.
Toledo Bill Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 oh and BTW sometimes when you try and hit them out the extra 30 feet added by the bat makes it a tape measure shot and is aesthetically pleasing. Nothing like watching a ball you just hit go for a long ride! 297047 If you are indeed the hitter you claim to be... congratulations. I retired from playing ball 12 years ago and it always used to amuse me how everyone that played softball claimed to be a 400 ft power hitter that just missed the majors. I saw one individual in 20 years of playing that hit nothing but line drives (that also occassionaly carried out). If you are truly in that class, you are an asset to any team. Most of the claims I heard, however, turned out to be so overblown it was ridiculous. Not doubting you, but the stories I used to hear would grate me. I always found that the new guy I wanted on my team would be the one that said... "just give me a tryout and you be the judge".

Transalation - they hit one out at a field with 275 ft fences in their co-ed league once this season.

Just like all the 400 pound bench pressers you talk to that must be "having a bad day" struggling with 225.

"just give me a tryout and you be the judge". 297624 I am a line drive hitter that hits a few homeruns every season and I have never hit one 400 feet. I do put them out over the 330 fence. Everyone on my main team can hit a homerun. We bust on each other if we hit one with noone on or only one because we only get 3 a game in that league. We dont like to waste them. Sometimes though you line one and it carrys. BTW I do not hit the farthest homeruns on my team. Probably the third or fourth farthest. The best was last summer we were playing a game on a Friday night. There was a concert going on behind leftfields wall. My buddy hit a extra inning walk off homer over the 330 homerun fence and it shattered someones windshield who was attending the concert. We watched as everyone at the concert looked to see if it was their car. We know better to park behind the fence. Greatest homer I have ever witnessed in my softball career. BTW when I bat my team does the Tomahawk chant- I always crack up! The reason I never pop up is I keep my chin pinned to my shoulder and I keep my elbow up high. I swing very even every time. If you keep your chin pinned and back elbow up you will line the ball almost everytime. Turn your wrists and get some leg drive into it and you will drive it. If you drop your front shoulder and you will lose power and pop up.
Pete Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 one more hitting tip for you. If you follow the advice on my last post- keep your chin glued to your shoulder and your back elbow up, turn your wrists and drive your legs- you will line the ball hard. I like to set up for the outside pitch- I stay off the plate. If you try and pull an outside pitch it will go up the middle everytime. If you keep your shoulder up, etc- you will line it right up the middle. If you drive your legs and get good wrist action you will split the two middle outfielders. Try it out. Its almost a guaranteed single or more.
