Good strategy for GM in future offseasons: sign lots of FAs in spring. Trade odd ones for draft picks in August

Last trades of Teller and Bodine hint life hack for GM. You can sign lots of FA in spring like Beane did. Much more than you really need.

And trade odd players for draft picks in August. I hope Beane will repeat it every offseason. The additional competition in camp is also usefull for players who stay on roster.

Teller was a 5th round pick. They got back the 5th rounder, gained a 6th, and lost a 7th, iirc. Kind of a wash.

Not really, considering they got a year's worth of use out of him. Not only that, the 7th is in 2021, which according to draft charts is pretty much a half-box of tape. Really great move by Beane, who would have got nothing if they cut him, anyway. Maybe not as good a move as taking away a Cheatriot pick for a guy they would have cut and was terrible last year, but still pretty good.

Unless Buffalo becomes a destination for players, It might going to get harder to sign so many "extra" free agents in coming years, especially as we get a reputation for trading players in trading camp.  Vet players would usually much rather pick their destination than sign in one place then get traded a few months later.

Not saying these trades are bad, it was smart to get something for guys that were going to be cut, but it's probably not really something you can do year after year as easily.

what a cluebot post this is.....is there anything else from the world of the obvious you wanna give out life hacks on?????

How about signing every free agent available and keep the best ones for our team and trade all the leftovers for lots of picks

I think the better and more clear strategy of Beane is to take what you can get, when opportunity presents itself, for guys that are on the outside looking in at a roster spot.

Buffalo was lucky to have a surplus of offensive linemen  so trading worked out well this year. Every year is different. I don't believe its a trend.

Most free agents worth trading later will come with cap ramifications. At this stage in building I’d generally say we need to max out spend on the roster not buy day 3 picks.

if something doesn’t work out may as well get value though.

Except that they upgraded to better players in the process so they recouped their original compensation which never happens and upgraded talent.

wow.........this might have been funny in the AFL days but I highly doubt it

I am hoping Beane stockpiles some picks and cash in on a trade soon. He may have a player targeted. If not he can use them later...

Why do you think this was luck??

Isn’t sign free agents in the spring like, kinda a given?

The Bills went way past the norm in numbers of FA signed.

A large part of how they did that was clearing all that cap space by eating $50M+ dead cap the previous year.

To do what Beane did, you have to get that cap space.

The Bills can't have a good team and have that much cap space every year.

We were Lucky the Patriots center went down and Cleveland felt the need to upgrade otherwise Teller & Bodine could have been waived with nothing in return

Yeah this rates an :flirt:.  Mebbe 2.

Good FA with choices aren't going to sign without some guaranteed $$ and a perception that they have a strong shot to make the roster - something signing herds o' guys tends to bely.

Street FA are typically street FA because they don't have a lot of demand, and said demand will not be increased by preseason.

We were able to sign a pile of OL FA this year because it was clear that 4 out of 5 spots on the OL were up for grabs, so guys who were strong #2s on other teams saw themselves as having a real opportunity to lock down a starting role here.  Worth a shot.

We were able to trade Bodine and Teller because they put down a good bit of game film with us last year, not because we were turning spring FA signings into draft picks.  Teller in particular is seen as still having development potential since he was our 2018 draft pick.  Bodine is durable, going to a team that needs some durability at center and has the best OL coach in the business.
