I love much of what Coach McD brings to this team. But concerned about his old school approach to the game & game management. Stuck in the past. No surprise that he loves 4 pre season games. While new age 21st century coaches like Rams coach refuses to play starters in any preseason game, I have Coach McD playing Jerry Hughes for the entire first quarter. Why? It’s his third year in this same defense, been here for entire training camp,  went through 2 scrimmages with Carolina, what in the world is the benefit of him playing entire first quarter of preseason game 2?  The only proven pass rusher Bills have, and he is exposed to injury for what possible reason? If u want 4 games to evaluate players, let someone like Darryl Johnson play against first string O Line, and let Hughes sit. And in a preseason game, with 4th down and 4 to go at the 30 yard line, why aren’t you going for it instead of trotting out your experienced kicker to kick a field goal?  Rams coach sat his entire starting lineup thru the entire preseason last year, and his team made it to the super bowl. Are u paying attention to the 21st century NFL, coach?

Let me ask did that Kicker MAKE the kick?

Maybe He needs some game practice with Two Misses this Preseason and 6 of 11 down the final part of the season.

Whats next? Hold all starters out of practice? Hold them out of training camp? Hold them out of mini camp? Dont allow them to train in the offseason?

Injuries are going to happen...many serious ones are non-contact injuries that happen while training or in air drills...

If i am not mistaken Hughes didnt play in the first preseason game and McDermott seems to be rotating starters...

This is really something silly to be worried about.

They need to roll into training camp already bubble wrap...they might get hurt walking from their Truck to the facility

It's not old school to play your starters in preseason games. Most teams do that. A few teams do not.

McDermott played the starters less than many teams in game 2 because the work they got done in joint practices. And I would bet he'll play them less than many teams in game 3 as well.

And by the way, what do you have to say about Bill Belichick? He has played starters in preseason his entire career, although he has been holding dinosaur Brady out recently.

Good lord, worried about McD, worried about Spain, worried about the 3rd string QB, worried about Ed Oliver's attitude, worried about worrying......these threads really bolster the need for a shortened preseason!

The OP makes a good point which anyone following the team should long know by now.

McDermott is an old school guy and definitely not some sort of up and coming, new age savant who is going to make a name for himself with innovative thinking.

That's just not who he is.

Hopefully no one gets hurt in the pre-season games, but I wouldn't harp on that specific aspect of it.

Hey man, if SRV worried about the risks of flying in a helo in bad weather, he'd still be jamming.

McDermott is a defensive coach. What's the new age trends on defense? Pressure up the middle instead of on the edge, versatile players, smaller faster linebackers who can cover, and a realization that an elite secondary is more important than an elite defensive line. Sound familiar? That's exactly what our defense is. We drafted Ed Oliver because he is a new age interior penetrator. We have rangy coverage linebackers in Milano and Edmunds. The focus has been on the secondary.

On offense it is up to McDermott to hire innovative coaches and coordinators to make that happen on that side of the ball. McDermott fired the coordinator from year one and hired a new up-and-coming coordinator in Brian Daboll.

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed that in these preseason games, the starters (which is only for the first quarter, anyway), on both sides of the ball, and on both teams, move at about 3/4 speed. The starters are installing schemes, and working out kinks as a unit. That's why Jerry needs to be there. But, none of the starters, on either team, want to risk their season.

It's after the depth players start playing that the game speeds up, and players really start hitting, and taking hits. These are guys that are fighting for a roster spot, and want to show the coaches everything they've got. I'm not sure if there is a stat for this, but I would suspect that the majority of injuries that happen in preseason games happen in the latter quarters.
