Tiberius Posted November 28, 2019 Posted November 28, 2019 Good job Congress and President Trump! China warned the United States on Thursday that it would take “firm counter measures” after President Donald Trump signed legislation that backs pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. The law requires the State Department to annually certify that Hong Kong is an autonomous city in order to continue its trading relationship with the financial hub. Reuters reports that Chinese government officials in Beijing summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad Thursday to demand that Washington immediately stop interfering in China’s domestic affairs. Protesters in Hong Kong responded by holding a peaceful “thanksgiving” rally complete with American flags to express gratitude for the support. https://www.thedailybeast.com/china-warns-us-over-trumps-hong-kong-law-as-thousands-march-at-thanksgiving-rally-in-central-hong-kong?ref=home 3

After three years of complaining about a half-assed trade war, now that we're close to striking a trade deal, they're passing legislation to sanction China? This is why the Democrats are trying to impeach Trump over foreign policy differences. Democrats are confused by a foreign policy as anything more than a series of ill-considered knee-jerk reactions. ..because China has been a willing and talkative partner in these talks?.....SERIOUSLY?.....so we should repeat the Obama tough talk "red line in the sand" crap for the same NON results?....we should just cave to DC Tom's all knowing "We Can Be Friends Foreign China Policy"......um...er...oh...ok.......SMH......Kiss Azz II......

What? I point out the Democrats' complete lack of any consistency on everything, and you think that means I have some sort of fondness for China? No one's noted yet that their China policy evolution is undistinguished from their Russia policy evolution: pursuing close, friendly relations (to own Republicans) until they suddenly do a complete 180 and decide the nations are our natural blood-enemies (again, to own Republicans)?

We've always had the upper hand as it pertains to China. There's nothing that they can do to gain leverage without hurting themselves more. Now all Xi can do is try to save face within his country. Our position is called the "catbirds seat".

I've been reading about that for...at least 20 years? Probably the worst thing about the NYT is that they believe reality doesn't exist until they say it does. 2 1

The morons in the comments section are great for a laugh: Quote Considering that the American government is running on borrowed Chinese money, "laughable" is not the word I would use. They haven't budged on trade significantly, because when the debt is called in, Beijing will be calling the shots on US trade policy. Pretty much like they are now. You know, because treasury bonds can just get "called in". 1

B-Man Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Don’t Forget About Hong Kong It’s been almost a year since demonstrators took to the streets of Hong Kong to protest the now-pulled Extradition Bill. Police beatings, riots, political arrests, student walk-outs, and property damage have all followed with the government in Hong Kong and China attempting to portray everything as a one-off with very little public support. Reality is much different from Beijing’s fantasy with pro-democracy candidates making major inroads in District Council races forcing HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam to promise to reflect on the results. She also vowed to not step down from her position while visiting the World Economic Forum in Switzerland last week. There’s still much to discuss and process about Hong Kong and the coronavirus-caused pause, along with the Lunar New Year, might be the best opportunity for both sides to reflect on the past year. It’s doubtful the tension and conflict will end, and police launched more tear gas at protesters last night, but this shouldn’t cause any of the “Five Demands. Not One Less” crowd from backing down. .https://hotair.com/archives/taylormillard/2020/01/26/dont-forget-hong-kong/ 1 1
