Defence minister says 'no force' can stop China reunification

Defence minister Wei Fenghe tells security forum that resolving 'Taiwan question' is China's greatest national interest.

 

"Resolving the Taiwan question to realise China's full reunification is the irresistible trend of the times, China's greatest national interest, the righteous path to follow and the longing of all Chinese people."

 

Beijing sees Taiwan as a renegade province that needs to be retaken by force if necessary, a message President Xi Jinping reiterated at the start of this year.

 

"However we will never allow separatists for Taiwan independence to have their way, nor allow interference by any external forces. Advancing China's reunification is a just cause, while separatist activities are doomed to failure."

 

China claims the entire South China Sea, but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, which surround the strategic waterway, also have claims.

 

"The South China Sea islands and Diaoyu islands are inalienable parts of China's territory. We will not allow even an inch of territory that our ancestors have left to us to be taken away," Wei said.

 As of 2018, the PLAN has a single combat-ready aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, with a second and third under construction.[1] It is projected that China may possess five or six aircraft carriers by the 2030s

Back in the mid-90's, an old Chinese general let it slip that their plan was to take the island in 2020. I think he was quietly retired soon after.

 

Be interesting (and terrible) to see if this slip was actually true.

The Navy ship  I was on since it's pre commisioning  DE 1083 was given to Taiwan in the early 90s. That was a good anti sub ship , hope we continue to support them. Been there on liberty , good people just like Hong Kong.

Liaoning is a Navy Cross waiting to be awarded.  

 

China's not going to have a truly capable carrier until the 002 class launches.

You are right , I went to shore duty in 74 , the DE  renamed the FF  fast frigate . It was a very advanced ship for it's time. Soviet subs did not have a chance against a nuclear tipped anti sub rocket  ASROC

But since the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to its U.S. equivalent, and the city has no capital controls, a listing there can generate hard currency for foreign takeovers and investments. It would be harder to use a Shanghai stock sale for the same goal.

For technology firms and others, New York has been another favored listing destination, but worsening U.S.-China relations could make this more problematic. Hong Kong offers a convenient way to tap many investors who are familiar with China.

For global investors, Shanghai and Shenzhen have become more accessible. But investors typically prefer Hong Kong’s legal protections, and they have other concerns about mainland markets, including the difficulties of moving money out.

 

Plus: “Foreign companies and state investors have long used Hong Kong as a staging post for investing in companies or building facilities in mainland China. HONG KONG IN HISTORY’S LENS:

 

Consider the past 10 days. On Nov. 8, security forces killed a student protestor. Another was wounded Nov. 11. On Nov. 12, Beijing sycophants claimed mobs had brought the city to “the brink of total collapse.”

 

Beijing blames the U.S. and Britain for the violence. But accusing adversaries of doing what communist sympathizers and agents are actually doing was a standard Cold War Soviet and Red Chinese tactic.

 

Stuart Heaver (reporting from Hong Kong for The Independent) thinks Beijing is already invading. “There may be no tanks,” Heaver wrote, but many locals believe “PLA troops are already here, disguised as Hong Kong riot police …” They intend “to impose Tiananmen by stealth and create a climate of fear.”

 

The suspect police “are often heard speaking in Putonghua dialect,” Heaver writes. Putonghua is Mandarin (Beijing) Chinese. Most Hong Kongers speak the Cantonese dialect. Eighty-five to 95 million Chinese living along the south China coast speak Cantonese or Hakka, a related “southern” dialect.

 

Which leads to a linguistic connection that disturbs Beijing’s mandarins (pun intended): Seventy percent of Taiwan’s 24 million people speak Hakka.
