Royale with Cheese Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Who was the better lead for Genesis?
SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 (edited) based on the thread title ... I wanted to say Genesis both are good. Edited August 13, 2019 by ShadyBillsFan

SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I wish Maybe THATS the problem!!! Both had solo careers and did well. In the band Genesis both were excellent there you go ... I FIFY
row_33 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Less thrilled with Gabriel G and his solo work as I age. best G song ever is Dance on a Volcano, good fun figuring it out on my own for many years as a crummy drummer. Phil’s later G and solo gains in enjoyment as time passes. my Lord of the Rings, punk rock days are over...
Royale with Cheese Posted August 13, 2019 Author Posted August 13, 2019 Are Shady and Row writing a song right now? Both of your replies are in a song lyric format. 1
row_33 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 It’s how we rhapsodize when playing music critic? Good find
frostbitmic Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Peter Gabriel was far better as the lead singer of Genesis. The band went downhill with captain commercial as the lead. 1

The "I Can't Dance" song I think is just terrible. 1

Wasn’t thrilled with most of Lamb at the time, first 3 “Phil” albums were mainly written by Banks and Rutherford finally allowed to get flowing. They are excellent. phil couldn’t drum and sing these songs so they hired Bill Bruford for first year tours. 2
WhoTom Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Depends. If you like real prog rock, then Gabriel. If you prefer bubble-gum pop, then it's Collins. 3

US Egg Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Two eras of Genesis, both unique, the latter being commercially successful beyond belief. I'll take Gabriel's Genesis everyday of the week. 1
Mark80 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I'm in the Collins boat, but my favorite song of theirs may be a Gabriel one. Really dig The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I'm just not into the progressive rock that much and Collins had a more mainstream sound when he took over.
Rocket94 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 (edited) They were both good...each bringing their own sound. Gabriel provided a darker, ambient and progressive sound. Collins more of a mainstream pop sound. Edited August 13, 2019 by Rocket94

No no no. between Gabriel and Phil’s pop dreams was a third era of Rutherford/Banks writing with Phil singing. it deserves its own recognition and is a bit below the best of Gabriel’s work

The Collins trio is decent pop but not real Genesis. Journey is another group, started as a progressive jazz rock offshoot of Santana, then wimped out to the Steve Perry led "Open Arms" mom band. 1 1 1 1
Rocket94 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 The Journey debut album was excellent. It sounded nothing like the commercial music they would later produce. 2

Yes he had a much more darker and introspective sound, but that was his trademark...progressive rock wasnt intended to be a cheery top 40 sound.
