Up here in Canada we like to look at the crazy shh you Americans do and pretend like we're not crazy too.. But some lunacy has been happening up here. I might have to move further north!!

First we had those two kids playing real life Grand Theft Auto, killing 3 people, stealing cars and evading police and even the Canadian Army(which is probably 3 guys on a Canoe).

Now some gamer kid killed his whole family and posted the pics on a gaming forum, because he didn't want them to be ashamed of him since he's been skipping University. WTF

I mean, 2 crimes sensationalized in Fox News links across an entire country, aint exactly that huge.

I'd say the bigger Canadian news is Chase Bank getting kicked out and any Canadian with a Chase credit card having their current balance completely forgiven!

I hope some of you had some big balances that are going away!

I've literally never met anyone here that banks with Chase. I've only seen a handful of locations. We have some Banking GIANTS up here that actually own many American banks. They took over after the banking disaster you guys had.

Also, I've been in the credit and collections industry for 15 years now. I will GUARANTEE the debts will not be forgiven. They will likely be purchased by a bank up here. Probably TD.

I'm reading posts all over reddit today by Canadians who received their debt forgiveness letters today. Some $500, some $1500, some $5000...

Chase is forgiving debt, cutting their loses, and getting out of town in order to avoid a major lawsuit. It's easier for them to forgive that debt than try to get the money.

The major question is no one is sure how the forgiveness might affect taxes.

I'd imagine it would be counted as income, no?

Yeah, that's the question no one is sure of the answer to yet.

Still, I'd rather pay the taxes on $10k than have to pay off the full $10k debt.

Hmmm I'm seeing it too, but no reliable sources. Mostly people online. I hope it's true but I still don't believe it. Like I said they can simply sell it to another bank or debt buyer like the company I work for and move on .. I'd like to know what they report to the credit bureau.

The more I think about it. I think they have likely sold it already and that's why it has been "forgiven". These people will likely receive a letter from their new creditor soon.

I live in the Chicago burbs, but I work with a few people who live near the high crime areas. The way that they discuss it suggests to me that they have become desensitized to it.

You know last time it was this bad in Chicago?  Prohibition.  Just be thankful it doesn't spread out onto Michigan Avenue.  Last time 90 years, that happened, it led to gun control at the federal level.

Be careful what you wish for.

Exactly.  It's NOT spilling on the Mag Mile, "good" parts of town.  Very localized.  Not in the burbs... Etc...

Like be careful what people wish for, when it does spread and get truly random... The bee will be in the bonnet and We will all get stung.  It happened before in 1920s/30s... Then 60 years later they started laxing up gun control in other jurisdictions.  Weapons have no borders.

I know. Ever been to the Green Mill? It was Capone's bar at one time. The trap door is still behind the bar! There is a piano player who takes requests at the bar. I once requested "What I'd say" and the whole house went nuts!

By the Chi Harbor Lock... That was Al's Cave.  A bee line right into city with bootlegging. There is a hidden dock there where the Feds would hide.

Once the violence spread... The gun control came.

What do you think the answer should be?  Wild west?  We are no where near that.  If it happens, the whole country will face ramifications.

Much different times now.  The violence is kept isolated in the impoverished parts of town.  Should we allow them to be legally armed or go in with martial law?

I would suggest to my fellow Americans that we work together to clean up the shithole sectors of our society.  Or, it's like launching nuclear waste towards the sun.  It's very likely the stuff blows back at you.  Nobody will be immune.

Gang related violence, inner racial conflicts, poverty, oppression...some of the themes.

Create a police state? How would that work? It would probably compound the situation further.

They were about to get hit with a HUGE lawsuit for anti-consumer practices.

They did not sell the debt, as any attempt to profit from it would also trigger the lawsuit. None of the communications from Chase say they are moving/selling the debt. They all only say that the debts have been wiped and take it as a gift.

Basically, they decided it was cheaper to wipe the debts than to deal with/settle the lawsuit.
