One summer in college I worked construction in Hilton Head. They paired the college kid with the guy who only spoke Gullah. We were trying to learn to communicate (better than pointing), but it was over 100 degrees for 3 straight weeks. He passed out on a 2nd story roof, fell and badly broke an arm. Never saw him again. And I never did understand a single thing he said.

Did he always have some mighty fine wine?

No. It was Peter, not Jeremiah.

I’m the one with the wine.    ?

OK, full disclosure, it’s more quantity over quality. Not a wine snob, but cranky if I run out.

Does this qualify as a second language for you???

Ha ha, it kind of is. I can do a pretty good impression but I lose it after a few sentences. I can’t sustain it. It’s kind of like Spanish. I’m much better at understanding what they are saying than I am saying it.

I took 6 years of french growing up in WNY. I didn’t realize how valuable Spanish would be instead. A couple years ago I got on Duolingo online and got back up to 35% fluent (according to them) fairly easily. French came back pretty quickly, then I quit because I’d never use it, only to lose it again. I should have started from scratch with Spanish! I could use Spanish regularly around town, and we’re leaving for Spain late this month. Maybe I’ll start over and hope to learn enough to just not be too rude.
