I'll say the following on UBI.  It should not be offered as a crutch for those who want to lay on the sofa all day.  However, if technology advances as some have predicted it could soon affect highly educated fields such as lawyers and doctors.  We could very well see the future of medicine similar to what is on Star Trek.  Machines and AI to guide them to do diagnosis and surgery as necessary.  Already, some types of surgery are already being done via robots.  The bottom line is that in the next twenty years we will only need to graduate a fraction of the students we see today enrolled in law school, medical school, engineering, etc..  So I don't know that UBI will only become important to those who were banking on a career chasing carts or stocking shelves at Walmart.  From an economic standpoint the future could look like one those SF movies from years ago where a large percentage of society are idle individuals.

Learn to code?

The programmers who code the machines are far fewer than the number of workers replaced by the machines.  If that was not true, the programmers would not be financially viable.  Automation is for leverage.

The fourth Democratic presidential primary debate will take place next month in Westerville, Ohio, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced Friday, as candidates fight to qualify for the televised showdown.

The debate -- it'll be the fourth round this year -- will be hosted by The New York Times and CNN at Otterbein University, the party said in a news release. The debate is scheduled for Oct. 15. (If enough candidates qualify to split the candidates over two nights, the second will be Oct. 16.)

My understanding is:

1. The idea is the extra $1k allows people to pursue careers they are passionate about, even if they traditionally pay less or the pay is volatile. $1k on its own is way below poverty. Not exactly enabling people to not work at all. So, back to the question, I don't think it creates jobs overall, but it makes some careers more viable.

2. Maybe more people could afford to go to the gym, or even a personal trainer, with the extra income. Maybe a family gets stronger because they can finally afford a vacation.

3. Assuming his stance hasn't changed, part of the deal is that to qualify for the $1k you cannot be subsidized under any other government programs. So it could, in theory, get some people to stop gaming the system for disability, unemployment, etc. Which would also cover part of it's cost.

Lord knows if it'll work in practice, but I can understand the sentiment and appreciate the stuff in point 3. He commented specifically about how this was free and clear and the impact that can have mentally vs being on disability and potentially even dreading getting better because you'd lose disability. So then you almost want to be disabled, if that makes sense.

1.  How on earth have we all been able to pursue careers we've been passionate about without $1k a month from the government?  We must be amazing people

2. So now I'm funding people's vacation??  The best place for a family to become strong is the dinner table

3.  That makes sense.

Which Democrat was most pro-genocide last night? AOC is trying to get us leftists there! You just watch, once the Dems take office, anything will go!

The Taliban might get invited to Camp David!

Joe Biden might make friends with Chairmen Kim and lie for him!

Putin might get secret meetings with our president!

The Saudis will get a pass on murdering Washington Post Journalists!

Children will be stolen from their parents and stuck in cages!

I think there are a lot of miserable accountants out there who wish they did things differently instead of going with the financially safe route.

I definitely don't think that the plan is perfect, but it has some merits at least. I think that, as it evolves, the general premise will be an important one due to automation and people's general need for a sense of purpose.

A lot of people don't.  They have to work for a living rather than do what they'd love to be doing.

They just fail to understand that the reason they're not the lead guitarist of a multi-platinum rock band isn't because they're too busy working to tour, but because they suck at playing guitar.

She's heard the criticism she comes across as the angry, shrill middle-aged  "Karen" who wants to talk to your manager.

That is spot on and funny.

Though Warren would like the "middle-aged" term used to descibe her since she is 70.

Then give them money for college/education/training.  Enough of this "awwwwww we're sorry your life sucks.  Here...have some money."  My industry is being "replaced" by bots.  Guess what?  I'm excited about it.

Are you and Andy always this lazy or just when it comes to thinking about solutions?

You can't retrain a work force as quickly as these jobs will be replaced.

Think of how many republican truck drivers there are out there. They'll all be out of business within 20 years due to self driving vehicles. They won't just go back to college.

Can't wait for Republican primary debates....oh wait, that's right, democracy has been shut down on that side. Sad

Literally, GOP will not allow a primary. Wow

Debates are like tax returns.

Not quite sure what this has to do with anytime  If they are miserable and unwilling to make a change I have zero sympathy for them.

Why do they have to go back to college?

Funny how that didn't matter for coal miners.  #LearnToCode

Zero shot to win the general.

None.

He'll get trounced in the NH primary, likely Iowa as well. Then it'll all come down to SC for Joe where his black base will be tested.

If he wins the nom, it guarantees Trump 4 more years... so you got that going for ya.

and as for Joe's black base -- they don't want him:

I see you've given up the zero shot to win the nomination narrative you pushed for months, so you got that going for ya

the ever shifting goal posts...

I wonder how long it takes you to do the same for the general.

The Debates really don't matter. John Kerry beat up on Bush in 2004 and still lost. Romney beat up on Obama in 2012 and still lost, Hillary beat Trump three times really badly and won popular vote but still lost in EC.

You should read closer. He's going to lose 2 out of 3 of the first primaries for sure. The third will be in doubt by then as well.

Joe's done.

You thought the part when he was asked about deportations when he was VP went over well?

The part where he said "Obama was President, I was VP" and then a few minutes later yelled into the microphone -- after it set in that he made himself look a bit foolish -- that he stood by everything Obama did for all 8 years?  That was good?

Biden's the likely democratic nominee and, therefore, your next President.

Embrace it.

No, you should read closer and understand your own narrative better.

Before you were "Biden has a zero chance"

Now you're explaining his chance.

So which is it?

Zero chance?

He has a chance?

You're inching there at a snail's pace, but I think you'll get there eventually
