RochesterRob Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 I'll say the following on UBI. It should not be offered as a crutch for those who want to lay on the sofa all day. However, if technology advances as some have predicted it could soon affect highly educated fields such as lawyers and doctors. We could very well see the future of medicine similar to what is on Star Trek. Machines and AI to guide them to do diagnosis and surgery as necessary. Already, some types of surgery are already being done via robots. The bottom line is that in the next twenty years we will only need to graduate a fraction of the students we see today enrolled in law school, medical school, engineering, etc.. So I don't know that UBI will only become important to those who were banking on a career chasing carts or stocking shelves at Walmart. From an economic standpoint the future could look like one those SF movies from years ago where a large percentage of society are idle individuals.

The idea is the extra $1k allows people to pursue careers they are passionate about, even if they traditionally pay less or the pay is volatile. $1k on its own is way below poverty. Not exactly enabling people to not work at all. So, back to the question, I don't think it creates jobs overall, but it makes some careers more viable. 2. Maybe more people could afford to go to the gym, or even a personal trainer, with the extra income. Maybe a family gets stronger because they can finally afford a vacation. 3. Assuming his stance hasn't changed, part of the deal is that to qualify for the $1k you cannot be subsidized under any other government programs. So it could, in theory, get some people to stop gaming the system for disability, unemployment, etc. Which would also cover part of it's cost. Lord knows if it'll work in practice, but I can understand the sentiment and appreciate the stuff in point 3. He commented specifically about how this was free and clear and the impact that can have mentally vs being on disability and potentially even dreading getting better because you'd lose disability. So then you almost want to be disabled, if that makes sense. 1. How on earth have we all been able to pursue careers we've been passionate about without $1k a month from the government? We must be amazing people 2. So now I'm funding people's vacation?? The best place for a family to become strong is the dinner table 3. That makes sense. 1
Tiberius Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Which Democrat was most pro-genocide last night? AOC is trying to get us leftists there! You just watch, once the Dems take office, anything will go! The Taliban might get invited to Camp David! Joe Biden might make friends with Chairmen Kim and lie for him! Putin might get secret meetings with our president! The Saudis will get a pass on murdering Washington Post Journalists! Children will be stolen from their parents and stuck in cages!

I think there are a lot of miserable accountants out there who wish they did things differently instead of going with the financially safe route. I definitely don't think that the plan is perfect, but it has some merits at least. I think that, as it evolves, the general premise will be an important one due to automation and people's general need for a sense of purpose. 1

They have to work for a living rather than do what they'd love to be doing. They just fail to understand that the reason they're not the lead guitarist of a multi-platinum rock band isn't because they're too busy working to tour, but because they suck at playing guitar. 2

You can't retrain a work force as quickly as these jobs will be replaced. Think of how many republican truck drivers there are out there. They'll all be out of business within 20 years due to self driving vehicles. They won't just go back to college.

Then it'll all come down to SC for Joe where his black base will be tested. If he wins the nom, it guarantees Trump 4 more years... so you got that going for ya. and as for Joe's black base -- they don't want him: I see you've given up the zero shot to win the nomination narrative you pushed for months, so you got that going for ya the ever shifting goal posts... I wonder how long it takes you to do the same for the general.

That was good? Biden's the likely democratic nominee and, therefore, your next President. Embrace it. 5 minutes ago, Deranged Rhino said: You should read closer.
