The Real Buffalo Joe Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Anybody know of some good documentaries about rock music? Ones that focus more on the music than the artists personal life? Something that goes in depth about the songwriting/recording process? I really enjoyed the "Classic Albums" series that VH1 Classic used to air.
Gugny Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I watched a 3-hour documentary on the Eagles on Netflix a couple years ago. It was fantastic. 2
Seasons1992 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 You should watch Sound City. Also, No Direction Home (Bob Dylan) is really great. 2
Rocket94 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Kind of dark. but there is a good one about the Gits and Mia Zapata. 1990's band out of Seattle. Her death was terrible.

The Poojer Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 We've discussed it before but one of the best i've ever seen is Dave Grohl's Sound City, it's all about reclaiming a legendary mixing board and all the albums and artists that had come into contact with it in their careers. It's very well done and plenty of guest interviews. http://buy.soundcitymovie.com/ 1
RaoulDuke79 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 This isnt necessarily rock n roll, but it does have commentary from many rock personalities. I found it extremely entertaining. You can watch it several places besides Netflix. 1
SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Oh. I thought the OP meant something like The Who in Pinball Wizard carry on
Mark80 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) Paul McCartney - In Red Square. You get a great concert and a great back story about The Beatles in the USSR during the Cold War. Not really fitting your description, but still a very good watch. Edited July 23, 2019 by Mark80
Captain_Quint Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 The Last Waltz was good, and directed by Scorcese. 2 1
BUFFALOKIE Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Muscle Shoals. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DFNGtfpim0OM&ved=0ahUKEwimpdqAnszjAhWCTd8KHZwcDs8Qo7QBCBwwAA&usg=AOvVaw1i-i_5FUSOrWU3oN1oKBj- 1
T&C Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Not sure what you are into but this one is from 1971... also features some early Flo and Eddie... working on the song sheets is pretty cool, and the cast of characters is pretty diverse. Not for everyone but I check it out every couple of years: 1
BillsPride12 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Showtime had a couple good ones about Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd 2
Bad Things Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 I'll also recommend Muscle Shoals. The story is incredible. Another good one is Supermensch:The Legend of Shep Gordon. Again, incredible story. 1
The Real Buffalo Joe Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 I've seen a few recently in the past few years about various unsung heroes of music. Standing in the Shadows of Motown. It's about The Funk Brothers, the studio band for Motown. Those guys were fantastic. Played on more #1 hits than The Beatles, Beach Boys, and Elvis combined. Unfortunately they were essentially just hired hands, so don't have the bank accounts to show it. The Wrecking Crew, which played on basically any pop song you know from the late 50s until the mid 70s. A whole bunch of Beach Boys (Help me Rhonda, Good vibrations, Surfin' USA to name a few.) You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin fro The Righteous Brothers. California Dreamin. I Got you Babe. Strangers in the Night. These Boots Are Made For Walkin.MacArther Park. Mrs Robinson.Love Will Keep Us Together. Hired Guns- Musicians that are hired on a contract basis from tour to tour. Paints Billy Joel in a not so pleasant light. 1
Buftex Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 "Searching for Sugar Man" is fantastic... even if you are not familiar with the subject (Sixto Rodriguez), it is a great story...and you will love his music. Also "BANG! The Bert Berns Story". 2
coloradobillsfan Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 It Might Get Loud (2008) explores electric guitar through interviews with Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White Genghis Blues (1999) is more obscure but is a fascinating journey to the remote country of Tuva with blind bluesman Paul Pena
