The Senator Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 (edited) My first PC... JK - ENIAC predates me by a few years. I think the first real computer I used (other than an Atari Pong game) was a DEC PDP-8 or PDP-11. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was a fairly big player in both the business and scientific worlds - I’m surprised they got no mention in that article. The first actual PC I used was the IBM 5120. . Edited June 18, 2019 by The Senator
Steve O Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 People actually buy those new fangled gizmos? What a waste of money. Trust me, they'll never catch on. Whoever owns one probably owns an 8-track as well.
Just Jack Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 In school would have been an Apple II about 1981. Home was a Commodore 64, I believe 1983.
Gary M Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 No PCs were for sale the year I was born. I did have a commodore Vic-20, I wish I still had it.
plenzmd1 Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Prolly first used a Think Pad in like 92 or 93..work would have given it to me to use for demos and such. First computer I owned outright was a Gateway..prolly 95 or 96???? I did have one of these in 87 though!

Phone was about the same price as smartphones today..maybe $800? another $500 install. But holy moley a phone call was expensive. Seem to remember $4.00 for a 411 call, and proly close to $.50 a minute? And man, if you used that thing when you were out out of town and roaming...it was like $4.00 /minute.

apuszczalowski Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I believe my parents bought us a Tandy RLX 1000 from Radio Shack as our first computer. We played games having to constantly switch disks to keep going since my dad refused to let us load them onto the hardrive and waste space.
teef Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 i was born in 77, so the apple ll was out, but i the first computer in the house that i remember was the apple ll e. i'm not sure what the difference was, but i thought that ***** was the best.

I do remember calls were free after 9pm.

Marv's Neighbor Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Started with United Airlines in 1968, and they were using Univac then. Modification and expansion caused that to still be used for some things, when I retired in 2003. The FAA uses even older crap.

WhoTom Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 The first computer I used was a DEC PDP-11 mainframe for a programming class in my freshman year of college. One central computer with 96 "dumb" terminals for users. We also had access to a computer room with a couple of Trash-80 Color Computers; my friend had a Space Invaders game on cassette. The first PC I bought was a 16 MHz 286 (don't remember the brand) with a whopping 1 MB of RAM, a 40 MB hard drive, and a 3.5" floppy drive. It ran DOS 3.3.
