Restaurant tipping is straight forward. I'm tipping on the service, not the meal. 20% is the standard (including drinks). Could go higher or lower but usually not by much either way. If I'm with a big group I'll kick in extra after the anal retentive calculator folks figure out "what's right".

 

Hotel tipping is more interesting. They seem to always have their hand out for services I have little use for. Bell boy? You better get running now, I can handle my own bags. Does anyone tip the maids for daily service? I don't. But I'll leave a buck or two for clearing our plates while we are in between rounds of gluttony at the breakfast buffet.

You are correct.  Worked my thru college as a waiter and the tip was always pre-tax.  Post tax is one of my pet peeves.

I don’t need a bellhop, and I may just offend a few who try to get a few bucks from us by being pushy. It’s not the money as much as assuming I can’t do it myself. I got this stuff all the way from my closet to your front door. I can handle to the elevator and up to the room. That can be annoying. 

 

I don’t tip maids, but a cruise is different.

I leave 10 bucks a day for maids.  It's back breaking work. I value their work.  I am not a pig in the room... It doesn't get left a mess.

I don't tip for my service.  I tip to gracious and thankful that someone is helping.  It's about them, not me.

I don't even understand why it's necessary the begging culture... People simply aren't paid enough or we aren't taxes for our services enough if public entities have to beg for extra money, widows and orphans, etc... etc...

My wife would be pissed if she saw how neat I generally keep my hotel room (unless she's with me of course).

 

$10/day is insane though -- unless you're Richie Rich like you.  I probably average $2/day, which is about $10/hr.

 

 

 

p.s.  Where are you getting this 'cops and firefighters panhandling' nonsense?   Every panhandler I've ever seen is either a) a certified bum who hasn't held a real job in years or b) a professional begger (lots and lots of those).

We don’t tip at hotels, and that seems crazy! My wife is in a hotel more than home, and we are rarely here together. It’s almost all business travel, and sometimes I join her to see the city she is visiting. Tips at a hotel is odd behavior in our view. 

 

Again, on a cruise there is a different set of expectations. I’m fine with that.

I was a server at a popular WNY restaurant years ago. The menu was steak, lobster and French centered. The prices were high (even by today's standards) but money never appeared to be the object. It was more or less a social club for some. If I gave them what they wanted, I was tipped handsomely. I worked some brutal hours...but made a killing.

They stand @ intersection with a boot and beg for money.  Because their departments aren't getting enough.  The police should write them a ticket for standing in traffic.

I’m ready to get rid of our land line. Not because of cost, but the half dozen robo-calls every day are pissing me off more and more. I’ll vote for someone who will END that!

You would think... There would be a way to block them with computers. Lot of spoofing going on.  Got into an argument with someone who called my cell.  They said I called, I said no, they said my # on their caller Id.  LoL... How the heck are they spoofing #s.

 

At least a cell, you can block the #.

I used to tip 20% at vietnamese cafe I frequented about once a month.

 

I Built a relationship with a particular waitress who practically shoved all the other servers aside to get to me first. I always ordered the same thing so all I had to do was walk in, answer yes to her question of "same order", shop at the asian market next door, then drop off a $20 ($15 order) at the counter, as I was handed my food,  on my way back to my car.

 

I never realized how much I relied on this simple routine, until my waitress wasn't at work. Consequently, I had to wait in line to put my order in when I arrived, then forced to wait 10mins after my shopping trip as they had not gotten to my order yet. There was no tip on that one.

The order came out to $15+, so the tip was actually $4 and some change. In my head I rounded it down to about $4 so I did the math as 4 out 20.

The NYC PBA, DEA, and all of the other unions do NOT solicit. They never have and the PBA in particular has millions of dollars in the treasury.

 

When generous citizens call and ask to donate money, the Widows and Orphans Fund will accept it but that is it. These "charities" who call and solicit are scamming you.

 

PS: Decades ago, Yoko Ono, during a fiscal crisis, donated money to NYC (not the police unions) to purchase bulletproof vests for police officers.
