A few singles left on the golf cart for the guy hosing it down after a round. Tip the hotel concierge or front desk attendant for a dinner reservation/recommendation. If their driving wasn't ridiculous, Uber/Lyft drivers get a minimum $3 tip. 20% BARE MINIMUM if I sit down to eat and be served somewhere unless the service (and really, the service, not the kitchen) really sucks. $5 to the girl who cuts my hair to make it an even 20. A fiver to the delivery guy. All get increased if it's the holidays. Tipping well is a mark of good character and good social graces. People who suck at tipping suck at life. End of story. 1 Quote

I'm sure the server will enjoy the food that your lecture on how the tipping system has failed puts on their table. I eat out a lot (job hazard). The places I frequent, I get impeccable service. Tell me again how it's not working for me. Quote

I will normally tip when there is a tip jar. I even tip the people who count my cans when I bring them to the recycling place. Delivery gets at least $5 (or over $7 when I had a few too many the other night); barber gets $5 every time. I'm also a 20% minimum at a sit-down meal. I just draw the line at takeout ... but again, I very rarely do takeout. If I go to a pizza joint and have a couple slices there, I'll throw a buck or two in a tip jar even though I'm not being served, per se. Edited May 28, 2019 by Gugny Typo - got a problem with that? 1 Quote

I don't even really eat pizza much anymore, to be honest. Everything I get is delivered, sat down for, or prepared in front of me. I got a burrito for takeout from a tiny Mexican grocery a month ago, I think I tipped a dollar just because it's basically a one-woman operation and it amused me that she was like 4'5". Now, I go to a take-out place and they have the Ipad POS terminals that they hand you with tipping options that you have to decide what to tip. Many with 15% on the low end up to 25%. For take-out? Seriously? This is BS. Gee. I always thought that was for return customers who wanted to ensure the cook or counter people wouldn't spit (or worse) on the food purchased by tightfisted customers who say "For take-out? Seriously?..." Quote

I applaud your sentiment but the OP is also correct in that tipping has gotten out of hand, The concept comes from sitting down to eat a meal and having a service person wait on you and your guests. The better the service the better the tip. Think about a normal waiter / waitress, they have to take the order, handle questions about the menu, deal with requested substitutes, fill or deliver your drinks, bring your food to the table, refill drinks as needed, assure that everyone has what they need, possibly take another round of orders (for desserts) and then assure that all was well which the meal when finished. Compare this to the now ubiquitous tip jars where some person who makes a standard sandwich or burger or whatever expects you to tip them. As for pick-up food - think about it there is little service involved. With that said, I do tip well for a standard sit down meal, generally, 20%+. I do not put money in those ubiquitous “tip” cans. I will tip for pick up but at a lower level as there is some level of service involved in the situation. Quote

Gugny Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 One meal people shouldn't do the general 15%-20% tip on is a diner breakfast. Most diners (real diners) have a breakfast special that includes a couple eggs, homefries, toast, one meat and coffee (free refills) ... all for about $6. Sometimes I go to breakfast with my dad and my brother; we would never dream of leaving $3-$4 for a total tip. But I'm sure some do. Quote
SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) I follow the foreign European rule $1 EU Or the countries where No tips allowed China. French Polynesia. Japan. Tipping under any circumstance in Japan may seem rude, because good service is standard and expected. ... Korea. ... Hong Kong. ... Switzerland. ... Australia. ... Belgium. Just add a couple bucks to the menu price and pay the server minimum wage or whatever you wish. Don’t leave it up to me to decide what your employee makes. Unfortunately it is too far gone here to ever change the system. 1 Quote

I understand the differences. I guess I just don't get how a tip jar automatically means the worker was "expecting" or "demanding" a tip. Maybe someone can explain that one to me. 1 Quote

Johnny Hammersticks Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 Used to be a waiter during college. There was a family that used to come in for dinner every Friday night at 9:30 (we closed at 10:00). They weren’t jerks like some customers, but we used to fight over who had to wait on them. There were usually 6 or 7 of them, and their check would typically be north of $200. Problem was, for their tip they would always leave $5 and a Jesus pamphlet. I wanted to put rat poison in their food most nights. 1 Quote

I have worked in foodservice also and it’s the reason why I generally tip well and I do not send food back unless there is something clearly wrong with it. I’ve heard what can happen to returning lousy tippers or picky people. It’s not pretty (and no, I never did anything disgusting - there were stories aplenty). 1 1 Quote
