In some restaurants the management takes a percentage of tips. I can see restaurant wanting a small amount to process credit card, etc but I was told by employees I knew at one that management took 25% and would question employees who had lower percentage of tips whether all of the tip was there. I certainly do not intend on management getting part of tip even if the person greeting / sitting you is manager.  The restaurant had some issues with employees including workers' laywer and after the payout the employees I knew left and the restaurant changed to service charge. The restaurant include service charge on tax which I questioned and they said it is the restaurant's policy.  I paid the bill and told the manager my policy it I do not tip on taxes OR eat in restaurants which do.  I also told manager service sucks now and I used to eat regularly there 3 to 4 times a month but no longer.

credit card fee swipe in for a good chunk of the bill

done a few forensic audits of restaurants for various reasons

As I stated "I can see restaurant wanting a small amount to process credit card" (as far as I know no credit card company charges more than 5% which is certainly not a good chunk but I have never had diner's club) but restaurant's point of view was management was part of service so they should get portion of tips.

Isn't it illegal for management to take any percentage of tips?

Wow.  A lot of cheap ***** here on the board.  I go to a cafe once a week.  I pretty much get the same thing.  Comes out to about $15.  I leave $3.  Why? Why not. I can spare the $3.

You're patting yourself on the back over a 20% tip when you go there weekly?  And calling OTHERS cheap?!??!

Depends on state at least in US.  I know that was part of argument of employees and restaurant had to repay them NOT because it was illegal but the way they did it.

Yes absolutely.  Many others here tip 0% for take out.

this was a point my friend from England made too, but it seemed to me like the tip may have been 'built in' by the inflated prices, ie. pints of beer were commonly £5 which came to over $8 at the time of my visit to the UK

Well, yeah... the prices are built in as they should be.  What's the purpose of tipping anyway?  It's stupid.

We've even had pizza delivery guys hand back the tip we gave them, not because it was against policy, but because the pizza guys felt uncomfortable accepting tips.  When Kiwis travel to the US for a holiday, they all generally love it, but complain about two things... 1. Tipping and 2. Standing and waiting in line for "everything".

On a  similar note, when you go shopping in a store down here, the price that you see on the item already has the tax included, so you know exactly what you need to pay when you get to the checkout.  (No trying to figure out how much the tax will be.)

I was being serious. We are headed to NZ next winter and tipping is always  over the world. Some places expect it, some places are insulted, some areas have it built in, etc. It is good to know it is not expected or required in NZ.

Gotcha.

That's correct... you do not have to worry about tipping while you're down here.

On that note, what areas are you planning on visiting?  Don't hesitate to send me a private message if you have any questions.  I'm more than happy on giving you more tips!

(If you find yourselves on the top of the South Island, I'd even let you buy me a beer!)

To each their own, but I would rather pay a more reasonable $5 per beer and have the option of paying the extra $1-3 based on the service received rather than having it built in.
