Your brain is trained to take short cuts.  There is just too much info it is taking in to fully interpret it all in real time, so it makes assumptions.  It sees something and then something that is very similar to it and assumes its the same thing.  Once it does this, as far as you are concerned, it IS the same thing.  I think that's what is happening here.  If you focus on the right, it assumes the other two are spinning the same way since they are so similar and that is how your brain shows it to you.  If you focus on the left, it does the same thing the other way.  By the time you look at the opposite one directly there is enough focus on it for your brain to tell its going the other way, so it switches it.  There was something similar on that show about mind tricks / illusions and such.  Can't remember the name of it though, brain games?  mind games?  Something like that.
