Dan Darragh Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 I find it hard to imagine that Derek is on the roster week 1. He doesn't contribute anything to the gameday roster and would almost certainly be inactive 16 out of 16 weeks barring injury. It would make sense for the Bills to persuade him to retire and make him a coach. Being a "valuable guy in the QB room" isn't enough to have him stick around as one of the 53. 4 1
NewEra Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 I believe he’ll make the team and be inactive all year IF he refuses to become a coach. 3

Buffalo Junction Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 He’ll probably stick unless TJ impresses to the point that he can’t be stashed on the PS. He’s the elderly vet presence in the QB room that balances out JA. I’m sure they’d find a spot for him if he’d rather retire and switch to the coaching side of the ball. 1
Buffalo Barbarian Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Probably better as a coach, but whatever role he serves is fine, as long as it helps Allen. 5
MJS Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Players and coaches do vastly different things. Why would Anderson want to be a coach? Has he expressed interest in such a career move in the past? He probably finds it fun to still be one of the players, a part of the team, actually playing the game. And he's a veteran guy who adds knowledge to the QB room. A 3rd string QB doesn't usually add anything to the game day roster on any team. 4

Seems like Anderson is in this player to coach transition he still wants to be apart of a locker room but his time is running out
papazoid Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Anderson will make the team......as a COACH !! keep the rookie from UB on the roster
JMF2006 Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 I would like him as a Coach/Mentor after camp rather than on the 53. Keep him as a camp arm for now though. TJ to the PS,the Bills only need 2 active QB's
Doc Brown Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 It's easy if you try. Josh Allen's style of play makes him open to injury. If that happens I don't see McBeane being comfortable with Jackson as the backup (he'll pry be relegated to the practice squad). It's possible all three (Allen, Barkley, Anderson) make the 53 man roster and they won't dress Anderson unless there's an injury to Allen. 1
Ethan in Cleveland Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Barkley is a capable back-up and not a rookie. Just keep two QBs. Retire Anderson and Jackson will go to the PS. If they are going to keep 4 RB and a FB they will need to carry only two QBs 1
Inigo Montoya Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 (edited) Anderson will be on the team as the QB3 and inactive for most games, but Anderson will be in there during the week to help Allen and Barkley get better at their jobs. How many times has McBeane said how happy they are with their QB room now, and they recognize how they blew it by not having a strong veteran presence in that room at the beginning of last season for Allen? Turning Anderson into a coach will completely throw off the dynamic that they have created in the QB room. Allen lost his QB coach this year and he needs some stability. They are not going to take anyone else away from Allen at this point. They are not going to mess with a QB room that is working well. If Allen feels comfortable and is happy with Anderson and Barkley in that room, they are going to be there. Edited April 28, 2019 by Inigo Montoya 6 2

Also the pay day for a Veteran back up QB and a QB Coach or Quality Control coach is way different. Anderson is probably making a 2 year 10M contract.
ALF Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Anderson is $1.1M for 2019 . A shift to coach if roster spot needed could be done and back to player again if needed. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/derek-anderson-1422/
cage Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Are there an CBA rules anyone is aware of about essentially stashing a 3rd QB as a coach? Imagine if Josh Allen got hurt and missed some games. He would be re-signed as the back-up.
Rc2catch Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Anderson is just fine as QB3, let him stay on the practice field throwing balls to receivers and running offenses as opposed to standing with a clipboard. He’s there for more than just the quarterbacks, who do you think is practicing with the rookies and showing them the playbook and where to line up and make adjustments? I’m sure if he just wanted to coach they would of already brought him back as a coach. He’s better off as one of the guys and an equal as opposed to an authority figure
eball Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 He's not there to play, he's there to be a 2nd coach for Josh who isn't hampered by coaching contact restrictions. 2

Based on the draft, no one wanted him so someone will waste a roster spot on him? He will be cut and on the practice squad. Edited April 28, 2019 by KRT88 1
Buffalo_Stampede Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 (edited) Tyree will be on practice squad. Unless he's just lights out in preseason no team is going to add him to their active roster. Edited April 28, 2019 by TheTruthHurts
