Bosa on the other side even better...

Nope, we need some one to collapse the pocket and turn pressures into sacks

Thats freaking madness

Greatest DE since Bruce.

Pressures matter more, though.

Kind of a toss up.  Pressures can lead to turnovers but a sack can take the wind out of the sails of an offense.

I love the idea of another edge rusher, like bosa, but you make an interesting point as well.

Two rushing edges would prevent rollouts and scrambles to the edge, but without somebody to burst the pocket on the interior, the pocket QBs (Brees, Brady, Rivers, etc) would just step up into the pocket and deliver.

While I'm advocating for a wr/te to help Allen, I think DT is just as important, which is why I think DT is just as in play as wr/te early (first two picks)

The low standards of Buffalo sports where almost is praised. Lol. Hughes is not a top 20 DE in the league!

He will get paid like one.

Personally I would like to see the Bills sign Hughes to a 3 year deal and not exercise Shaq’s 5 th year option.

Trade for Watt...

I am a big fan of Hughes but he is going to be 32 in 2020. This is more of a wait and see type signing for me, if Hughes has a 8 sack season and gets solid pressure numbers I would give him a 2 year 20 million deal that has a lot of guaranteed money and bonuses.

This confirms to me that we are taking a pass rusher at 9 or trading up for one. We really have nothing outside of Hughes who has maybe 2 years left. If it comes down to Jonah Williams or Burns I will be completely torn.

I would like to see Hughes retained too. He’s likely to see fewer and fewer snaps soon due to his age.  A future contract should reflect that.  People talking about franchising him are going to be disappointed.  I can’t see him being paid that highly at that age and there’s be nowhere to go with an extension with that kind of money already on the table.

Boy howdy doesn’t it really highlight the need for more pass rushers on this team. We already need two more even with him.

Whether we franchise him or not... if he has a 2019 like 2018 he is using that franchise tag figure as the starting point in any negotiation with the Bills. "You guys want to keep me? Well the price is that franchise tag number.... if you don't get to that number I will turn you down...." so the Bills either franchise him and pay him that money guaranteed in one year and then let him go as he is about to start a season aged 33.... or they try and negotiate a 2 or 3 year deal spreading that $20m out more evenly keeping a more manageable 2020 cap hit but putting dead money in 2021 and 2022 if he hits the wall. Or they let him go next offseason. They are the choices I believe.

Jerry's a monster

That deal he signed a few years back is looking like a steal right now. Can't believe some thought he was overpaid.

Jerry definitely gets pressure on opposing QB's which is great & what we need, but how many times does he whiff on sacks due to over pursuing or having the qb slip off his arms?

This isn't a hate post bcuz i love Jerry, but I still think Jerry loses control of his body sometimes while rushing. So i'd like to see that improve a bit, like he has improved on taking bad penalties & i think his sack numbers will only increase.

But I'd have a hard time paying Jerry top end money for an extended contract extension due to his age getting in that zone where a dropoff is expected, coupled with his lack of sacks. Past 3 years he's averaged 5.66 sacks per year... even worse if you go out another year further. So whats that worth you know? Not top end money like what i've seen mentioned

I am a huge Hughes fan, but admit he can be a liability in run defense.

His patented outside speed rush too often takes him past the QB level where he has a collection of spin, rip, and counters that do allow him to still get to the QB...maybe not a sack, but pressure and at times fumbles and poorly thrown passes.

That same outside speed rush loses contain on the edge and allows teams to run under it...they just need a decent Center who can handle our DTs sans help and have their Guard chip, get to the second level, and neutralize any linebackers trying to fill.

Teams that ran on us last year took advantage of Jerry taking himself out of the play on runs because of the way he aggressively plays pass.

Not trying to be hyper-critical, as it stands in a pass-happy league it works out more than it hurts...even better when our Bills take a lead and teams abandon their running game.

That is generally how that works, yes.  I am not arguing that.  I just don’t think he will be worth the franchise tag amount  at 32.  He’s still very good now, but I do see the drop off already.  If we’re going to keep him beyond this season then a deal that takes that into account should be worked out.  Get him some more guaranteed money now and let him taper off into a rotational player.

The bigger point I was trying to make was the critical need at pass rusher.  Hughes is pretty much it right now.  I don’t care how good he is, that’s not enough.  He’s still going to be 31 and on the last season of his contract.  Even if he holds up physically and re-signs it isn’t enough. You need two or three pass rushers in this league and we’ve really only got him now.

I agree on the critical need. And to be honest unless Hughes tears it up again in 2019 I would let him walk. If he does tear it up I have said what I would offer him... a two year deal that is really a one year deal limiting the dead cap in 2021 to no more than $4-5m. If you really wanted to make it a 3 year deal that is really a one year deal then fine.... but that might be harder to agree on..

Yeah, he’s going to be a pass rush specialist in the not too distant future - and that’s sure still worth something.  The real danger would be having him under a contract that pays him like he’s a full time player when he gets to that point though.

If he does walk in FA after this season then we’re probably looking at a 3rd or 4th round comp pick.  That has to be weighed against his contract demands.  It’d be something at least.

Completely agree. And there is no guarantee he does become a rotational rush specialist. What if he is Simeon Rice or Jared Allen or Mario Williams or Brian Orakpo and he just plain hits the wall and you have tied yourself in to paying him like a starter for 3 years into his mid 30s?

If he plays well again in 2019 you try and keep him. But you have to make it an almost year by year thing.

After the Lawrence contract what do you pay him seeing as he is a older guy ? Will he be like Kyle & come back for a decent amount or will he go for the big bucks which most of them do ?

I hope he plays out his career in B/lo that would be awesome if Beane could make it happen but in todays NFL it sure wouldn't surprise me to see him jump ship for a huge contract with a bunch of guaranteed cash !!
