There were few exceptions. Frank Costello being the most notable one - one of the reasons he got shot was because of his opposition to drug dealing. On the whole when a mob boss said he was against drugs it was pretty much for show - in reality they were (And are) making huge profits from the trade.

Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed?? He was supposedly loosely based on Whitey Bulger.

And it turns out he was whacked by some random hothead with a grudge.

The mob ain't what it used to be.

That’s what they say because they don’t want a war.

Not even close.

Growing up in NYC you knew who these guys were. Now, they are a bunch of idiots, rats, and drug dealers. RICO wiped them out and what is left of them is a joke. The Albanians pushed them out of gambling in parts of Queens and the Bronx.

Italian gangsters make great copy, but are practically nonexistent today. Italians are your CPAs, doctors, lawyers, and unfortunately, Governor. :)

There's also a Mayor who's masquerading as an Italian.

NY Mafia did not deal in drugs years ago due to the Rockefeller Laws which imposed steep penalties including lengthy jail sentences.  Running numbers and bookmaking were staples of the mob income. But since the state governments got into the lottery business and sports gambling being recognized by more and more states the mob had to turn to other high volume money making enterprises to support them.

the government should just legalize every vice so that they are the only mafia we have to deal with.
