Maccagan must be feeing the hot seat.  He’s gone all out in Doug Whaley-like desperation to sign big names in Free Agency to phat contracts including:

Anthony “The” Barr

CJ Mosely

Jamison Crowder

Josh Bellamy

The retaining of Robby Anderson and Big Quince Enunwa.

And they may not be done as rumors are flying they are interested in Matt Paradis and possibly L’evion Bell.

Its easy to say that so far the Jets have “won the offseason” like Rex Ryan would say.

But will it matter?  It’s not hard to throw around guaranteed cash and sign players to big contracts.  We saw Buddy Nix and Whaley do this as Bills fans.  Loading a team doesn’t work unless they are properly utilized.  For that to happen you need good coaching in place, which comes down to Adam Gase and Greggggggg Williams.   Gase has been accused by Miami fans of squandering talent on several different rosters, and didn’t do very much to reclaim Ryan Tannehil.

Do you worry about the Jets next season after these splashy FA moves?

They have a good QB, so yes, Bills fans should be worried when a team like that loads up on bona fide talent. Gase, who I don’t like overall, calls good offensive games (unfortunately). Williams, who I despise, has had some occasional success over the years coaching good defenses.

I mean they are obviously improved from last year, but like us it all hinges on the development of their assumed franchise qb. But they have definitely improved, but they have a short window before they are in cap hell.

The Jets are a team on the rise. It may be as soon as this year. They are loading up around their young QB. We will see how it plays out but if you are a Jets fan you should be thrilled with what’s going on.

Spending big on FAs does not often equate to anything (Hi Kirk Cousins!). Guys sometimes become FAs for a reason and team chemistry matters a lot.

What the Pats and Steelers have done is the right model. No more than 3-4 big contracts, and spread the rest evenly. Resist the big FA payday and only pay out the big money if it's a homegrown star (FU Dareus).

Osemele was their best move so far.... everything else has been overspending for the sake of covering up bad drafting.

Again, why is this assumption being made? Most of their pickups have been on defense.

WE are the team on the rise.

Yes. It is impossible for 2 teams to be "on the rise" at the same time. Thank you for explaining that.

They are still the Jets until proven otherwise. I guess you could say the same thing about the Bills.

And they do.

News flash.

The Jets only had 32 players under contract.

Of course they needed to sign players.

It doesn’t mean they won anything of any variety.

We we see how it goes for them.

It’s all about the QB and if Darnold struggles, then the Jets are screwed.

Agreed - Mosley is a good player and will be a major upgrade over lee.  Barr I don't really get.

I didn’t say we weren’t. I just said that they are. Both of those things can be true. They have turned a good defense into a potentially great defense (especially if they add Quinnen Williams). They’ve improved their OL, added a slot guy and aren’t done yet on offense. What’s not to like about what they’ve done?

If they draft Q Williams, their defense will be one of the strongest in the middle of the field at every level, with All Pro talent at several positions. So yeah, they are going to be a tough out for sure.

That said, bringing together high priced talent in FAgency doesn’t guarantee anything, either. Chemistry cannot be forced, especially in football.

The biggest issue for them is Sam Darnold’s development. As it stands right now, the OL is still bad, and he’s set to lose his QB mentor Josh McCown who he was really close to last year. Mccown knows his role and is good at it, and the word is Gase is considering replacing him with Tannehill who is still young enough to want to start and imo won’t be nearly the mentor that Mccown was. Gase hasn’t yet shown he can develop a young QB. That would be my biggest concern as a Jets fan.

The expectation on Darnold to match his contemporaries is very high.  Each of the last five (which is all of them ) First Round QB has won their division in their second season.

wentz, goff, trub, Mahomes, Watson.

If Jets/Darnolda wants to keep pace and have a level of expectation they need to spend on both sides of the ball to have the Jets team prepared to make that Division push.
