BILLS02138 Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/3499500?print=true Yankees are asking the city/state to spend $300 million on a new train station, an improved ferry terminal, and a parking garage....
MadBuffaloDisease Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Well, if the redheaded stepchild of the NYC pro sports teams, i.e. the Jets (the Islanders don't count for squat!) can get one, why not THE premier pro sports franchise?

Pure BS if NYS gives them the cash for this. Which bascially ensures that it will happen.

kasper13 Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 The Yankees are paying for the $800 million ballpark themselves. They are asking for some improvements around the new ballpark and the Bronx Borough President is asking for others. If you have ever been to Yankee Stadium, the area around it certainly needs more than $300 million worth of improvements. Why would the Yankees spend $800 million to build a new ballpark and have it surrounded by a giant garbage dump otherwise known as the Bronx? That would be stupid.

Some of us spent 4 years in that dump! I hate the idea of them building a new stadium, hell, if Fenway is still up and running, I can't see how Yankee Stadium which is MUCH more modern needs to be rebuilt. But I can see them fixing up the area around it. I'd rather the taxpayer's money go to this than the stupid West Side Stadium. THat area of the Bronx needs a TON of work....the train station there is a dump.
bobblehead Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 All Steinbrenner needs to do is invest in some Glade Plug-Ins and Yankee Stadium is all set.

They are asking for some infrastructure improvements so that people can actually get to the stadium. Have you ever been there? It's in the middle of a sh--hole and a hassle to get to. Most teams would have left the Bronx for the suburbs years ago.

It's crap. Imagine Gerber Scientific demanding that the state pay to build their offices and pave their driveway. Same thing, only that instead of producing money for the economy, sports franchises and new stadiums simply divert the flow of money in an economy. Which makes these requests/demands for stadia simply retarded.
elcrusho Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Still, I do not see how they need more revenue considering how profitable they already are. If they need more revenue they have the capital to invest into their own better facilities. 290775 So do you have The monthly income sheet for The Yankees?
Tortured Soul Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Sorry, but isn't this really old news? I think the most scandalous part of the story is the line on the Times' new headquarters. The city used eminent domain to seize land for a private company. Anyone else have a problem with that?

My Take on Takings

What did that cost v. the revenue generated from the casino taxes? Bad anology with Gerber. Nobody is asking the state to build their building (not the Yankees or Foxwoods anyway) or their driveway. They are asking for decent highway and public transportation access, which is something the government is supposed to be doing anyway.
USMCBillsFan Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 They are the most profitable team in baseball. In George's defense they plow in a higher percentage of their revenue back into the team, but if any team can afford to pay for their own stadium, they can. The Giants, I believe, were able to build their stadium without money from the local government. 290810 Did you not read the whole thread? The Yankees are paying for their own stadium but want the outlying areas to be improved! Damn people...

Arkady Renko Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 (edited) Did you not read the whole thread? The Yankees are paying for their own stadium but want the outlying areas to be improved! Damn people... 291008 Yeah the Yankees are now willing to pay for their own stadium and I think they have more of a right to ask for help than the Jets. However, the investment of $300 mil for outlying improvements is a lot. It still is better spent than the Jets stadium, in my opinion. Especially considering the Yankees have been more loyal to the state and the city, despite previous threats to move to NJ. This is much more realistic the proprosals made under Giuliani a few years back. I still think the current Yankees stadium is good enough, they just needs some rennovations inside and outside the stadium. I think they are giving up too much history by moving. However close that might be. Again, I am a Yankee-hater, but I am trying to look at this objectively. *I never meant to say that the Yankees were not building their own stadium, but I believe they want land and outlying improvements that cost significant public money. Therefore the building of the stadium ends up costing significant public money. I was loose with my language as I lumped together building a stadium with the team's funds with building the stadium, buying the land and adding infrastructure improvements, and for that I apologize. Sorry also in general for the brain-farting and offense that it caused. I have tried to clean up my mess as much as possible.* Edited March 30, 2005 by JohnnyB

USMCBillsFan Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Personally, and it's not just because I'm a Yankee fan, but I feel their request is justified. They have been loyal to the city and state and having been to Yankee stadium a couple years ago for the first time it's pretty scary in that area. It's actually quite a $h!thole.
Arkady Renko Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 It's actually quite a $h!thole. 291278 The stadium, though, is pretty nice considering its age. In the end I think it's better for the Yankees to spend less money on both improving the existing stadium and perhaps providing some contribution to area improvements as well.
