Actually if u dig a little deeper the O-line gave Allen plenty of time.  Allen took a league highest 3.2 secs to pass the ball per pass. The run blocking was not so good but when Ivory was out there he seemed to fit what they like to do more.  What I'm basically saying is yes the O-Line deserves some criticism but the problems are coming from McCoy and Allen also.

"Some" criticism? Yikes.

He only had those 3.2 seconds to pass because he either held the ball too long, or he was out of the pocket, scrambling. Those 3.2 seconds certainly weren't because of our stellar O-line play

Since 2000 Shannon Sharpe  1, Gronk has 2 , Julius Thomas 1, Jeremy Shockey won 2 , Martellus Bennett 2, Dallas Clark 1 .  These guys were all considered elite when they won.

That's 9. Out of 18 years. So 50%? I see one in the HOF, one likely a first ballot HOF'er, and not much more than that.I think elite, I think HOF caliber. Do you think besides Sharp and Gronk anybody else from this list is getting in the HOF? I guess it boils down to what you consider elite. I'd say those others were outstanding, but elite? I'm not sold on that

IMO ... TE's typically require more time to get open .. than 3 step drops and slants to WR's .. so if you don't have an OL to allow for such time .. the TE impact is potentially mitigated.  Plus the OL IMO provides more help not only for Josh but the running game.

Defenses are getting better at preventing the quick slant... I think it takes a special kind of DB to cover those from the slot position where it usually is run, but there is a lot of contact that goes unflagged.

Most teams do use a variety of formations to setup picks to counter good coverage.

All that said, a good TE can chip that edge rusher and is simply a mismatch for DBs and LBs to cover on those same short routes without requiring the picks trickery because of their size and height advantages.

He is then a great option for a QB with minimal time to get rid of the ball...that is why a good TE is a great asset for a young QB to keep him upright and bail him out when he needs a quick outlet.

JMO of a piece of the offensive puzzle that has been missing for a while from the Bills arsenal.

I don't think anyone here disagrees that the o-line was horrible last year, but I think that is an issue that needs to be addressed by infusing o-line talent and better coaching to allow the Bills to run the ball effectively outside of Allen scrambles, use play action, and protect more consistently.

Or maybe it was the slow WR’s who couldn’t get any separation?

I really hope this coaching staff gives Croom a shot,  the few chances he got I thought he did a great job with those opportunities. I do think we need competition there but I don't think you need to do something extreme like waste a 1st round pick on a luxury position when you can get your Gronk in round 2.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that it is never black and white.

Allen likes to hit options beyond the sticks so he holds the ball longer.

He did not usually have a clean pocket to do that from, but has some pretty effective ability to move around to buy himself more time while keeping his eyes downfield.

There were times all our receivers were well covered. There were times our line gave him a clean pocket with enough time to deliver...not that often, but some games were better than others.

We can all agree that they flat-out sucked at opening any run lanes. Either way, there is plenty if room for improvement on the line and that stat of holding onto the ball is only useful if one actually watches the games to objectively apply it...alone it does not tell the whole tale.

We may be expanding the definition of "elite" here .. Julius Thomas & Dallas Clark .. may owe their stats to a guy named Manning, see Bennett's stats below .. think "elite" is a stretch

Actually I read that we were 6th in the NFL in separation.

While we need better pass catcher's.....I put the lions share of offensive woes on the offensive line....

Its not just the pass protection......this team could not run the ball to save their lives....and as anybody knows a QBs best friends are

a.   A running game that keeps teams from pinning their ears back and going right at him

b.  A defense that will turn the ball over and give you more at bats on offense

c.   pass catcher's not dropping balls that hit them in the hands

We had one of those things
