Lyrics

Gotta get up, gotta get out, gotta get home before the morning comes
What if I'm late, gotta big date, gotta get home before the sun comes up
Up and away, got a big day, sorry can't stay, I gotta run, run, yeah
Gotta get home, pick up the phone, I gotta let the people know I'm gonna be late

There was a time when we could dance until a quarter to ten,
We never thought it would end then, we never thought it would end
We used to carry on and drink and do the rock and roll
We never thought we'd get older
We never thought it'd grow cold, but now

Gotta get up, gotta get out, gotta get home before the morning comes
What if I'm late, gotta big date, gotta get home before the sun comes up
Up and away, got a big day, sorry can't stay, I gotta run, run, yeah
Gotta get home, pick up the phone, I gotta let the people know I'm gonna be late

Down by the sea she knew a sailor who had been to war
She never even knew a sailor before, she never even knew his name
He'd come to town and he would pound her for a couple of days
And then he'd sail across the bubbly waves and those were happier days, but now

Gotta get up, gotta get out, gotta get home before the morning comes
What if I'm late, gotta big date, gotta get home before the sun comes up
Up and away, got a big day, sorry can't stay I gotta run, run, yeah
Gotta get home pick up the phone, I gotta let the people know I'm gonna be late

Nothing like ‘You’re Breaking My Heart’ played at volume 11 to get the Locker Room bar (Delaware Ave.) going about 3 am on a Sunday morning, mid to late 70s.

The Locker Room was my bar back then, when I was a student at Canisius High.

(I can’t count the number of times that place was cited for underaged customers!)

?????

Drivers licenses were made out of cardboard back then...

And, obviously, had no photo. ?

Yep, anyone could be anyone as long as you met the basic criteria... hair color, weight, height, etc.

You did need a small modicum of intelligence - you had to remember the name, address, and - most importantly - the birthdate on that license.

I was always surprised to see kids finally make it to the front of the line, then fail that simple test!

My birth year of 1956 had an advantage in New York State, as all you had to do was carefully alter the block type style ‘6’ into a ‘5’, usually with a pin.  Then bury it under three layers of plastic film that most wallets use to cover their complementary picture of Sandra Dee.

At the Locker Room, just reaching for your pocket was usually good enough proof for the door staff you were of age.
