Interstate 81 in Syracuse

Recommended Posts

I had lunch today with a friend of mine who grew up in Syracuse, and he was telling me about this.

Summary:

Interstate 81 runs through the middle of Syracuse on a long bridge.

The bridge is 60 years old and needs replacement.

So the government will have to do one of the following:

  • $1,000,000,000 - tear down the bridge and shift traffic to Interstate 481 (which goes around the city)
  • $2,000,000,000 - tear down the bridge and build a new bridge in the same spot
  • $4.000,000,000 - tear down the bridge and build a tunnel

So, whatever they do, the government will have to spend a small fortune. And since it's an interstate highway, it's federal money and not state money.

Or build a GREEN bridge, but don't ask how much it costs, just sit back and enjoy the prosperity it causes.

Of course, if it's part of the 'Green Dream or whatever', it will be built by the hopes and dreams of those unwilling to work, with both cars and farting cow prohibited from crossing it.

What is the question? Bridge is failing and some solutions are on the table for consideration.

I live here, the people that think there could be a tunnel option are idiots. It's been said time and time again that a tunnel will not happen.

They've been talking about this for 10 years, and a decision was supposed to be made 2 years ago. But being a government job, of course it was delayed for more study. If you're bored, here's some articles and websites about the process...

Honestly this is the best option. I-81 tore the downtown in half when it was built 50+ years ago. For the amount of daily traffic from I-81 that's actually going downtown vs. passing through, a highway in this spot isn't necessary. I'm sure when it was designed in the 50s/60s, they were anticipating regional population growth that hasn't happened. Commuter traffic from the north and south will be able to get into downtown just fine with the community grid plan.
