I never liked comp picks.  The league has a hard salary cap for a reason and that's to strive for parity.  Awarding comp picks to the good teams that couldn't afford to resign all their good players seems to do the opposite.

Its very easy actually. The hidden magic formula is really Players gained vs players Lost. If you have more players lost then gained you qualify for a compensatory pick. Then they take the Average Annual Salary Of the players you gained and the players you lost and match them as equally as possible.

To have a player qualify thy need to meet a certain salary threshold as well. Players signed that were cut from other teams do not count in the players gained column

For Example:

Buffalo lost:

Seantrel Henderson

Preston Brown

E.J Gaines

Joe Webb

Buffalo gained:

Murphy

Lotelelei

Stanford

McCarron

Bodine

Bush

6 gained 4 lost = no picks

Now the Patriots were a question

Patriots lost:

Nate Solder

Malcolm Butler

Danny Amendola

Dion Lewis

Joe Bademosi

Cameron Fleming

Patriots Gained:

Adrian Clayborn

Jeremy Hill

Patriots lost 6 Gained 2= 4 possible comp picks

Solder AAV is over 15

Butler AAV is over 12

Amendola is almost 6

Lewis almost 5

Bademost 3.1

Fleming 2.5

Clayborn is 5 AAV

Hill was 1.3

So now match em up.

Lewis and Clayborn cancel each other and Hill and Fleming cancel each other

This leaves Solder= 3rd round, Butler 3rd round,  Amendola 6th round, Bademosi 7th round based on their AAV

But... but... but, had the Bills lost the 6 players the Pat's had lost, this board would have lost its s$#*, run McBeane up a flag pole, doused Kim and Terry in petroleum, and lit everything on fire.

That's the difference: we lose four players and people freak out. The Pat's smartly jettison six, and reap the benefits.

I agree as I said earlier, it’s very easy to jettison guys who want 12-15 million a year and replace them cheaply when you have Tom Brady, Drew Brees, And really good QBs leading. They lost Solder for big money, replaced him with Trent Brown and now Brown is gonna get huge money and they’ll get another 3rd next year

apparently as a condition of his punishment, the Pats will lend Robert Kraft to the Raiders for two seasons and receive a conditional third if Kraft performs community service. It's all about parity

They're rewarded for letting their players walk in free agency. They can do that because they have the personnel to get by with less talent.

It also means they aren’t cutting guys early, and often when they acquire talent it’s a trade or someone another team released.

If a team let's a player walk without an offer, the loss should not count in the formula.

Then the team would just make bs offers they know the player would reject.  It would just be easier getting rid of the comp picks.
