Nick Foles Franchise Tag Question

Irv

Recommended Posts

I read on the interwebs that the Eagles picked up Foles $20M option.  Foles then paid $2M to buy out his contract making him a Free Agent.  But then I read that the Eagles planned to put the franchise tag on him to try to trade him.

My question - with no contract, how can the Eagles put the franchise tag on him?  I'm not familiar with how that all works.

You can only tag a player who wouldn't be under contract.

Apparently the Eagles' compensation for some other team signing Foles under the Franchise tag is only going to be a 3rd rounder. I am surprised - i thought it would be higher.

Maybe they do have a deal worked out for a 3rd round pick and this is a way for them to get an additional 2 mill out of the Foles situation. Can understand Foles buying out - he wants more than one year guaranteed.

Would be interesting if Foles cant come to terms with another team - then he would rather sign the tag - will be funny if the Eagles have to pay draft compensation to some other team to take on Foles' contract:)

Eagles clearly have deal worked out with somebody as Foles seems to be playing along and isn’t complaining.

...Jax is supposedly in the hunt now that former Eagles QB Coach Difilippo was signed on in the same role........

That's a really good question.  The Eagles may believe they've found a contract loophole that would let them tag and trade a player who has exercised an option to pay back a bonus and VOID his contract, but basically that would have Foles in the position of giving up $2M for nothing - the franchise tag is $19.6M, so now Foles gets $19.6M instead of $22M.

I can't imagine Foles and his agent signed a contract in good faith where that was the expected outcome of his $2M payback.

I am pretty sure that Foles 2019 qb franchise tag is higher than 19.6, I think I read 24 or 25 million.

This could get hairy.  Because he had to pay to become a free agent they may not be able to franchise him no matter what the CBA says.  He purchased the right to become a free agent.  So, they would be taking compensation for him becoming a free agent and then denying that right.

I'm confused.  You can tag a player who is currently under contract but not one that has no contract - right?.

It looks like to me that he had $20M in hand.  He didn't take the $20M and paid back $2M so he is currently at  -$2M.  If they tag him, then he is at $25M (going franchise rate) -$2M = $23M.  Good for him.  If they don't tag him.....then he is back at -$2M.

So why would he be comfortable currently at -$2M (no tag) or $23M (tag)?   Because Foles agent thinks there is a deal out there at more than $23M.

WHO IS IT?  I'm confused.  Need Jethro Bodine to add me up a few naughts and power slam me through a table.

Foles' contract was kind of unique. You had the beginning right.

He was under contract for 19 under a team option. He had a right to pay $2m to get out the deal. He did. He is now a UFA .

Now that he is a UFA with the Eagles retaining his rights, they can now franchise him. This essentially allows them to control where he goes and get a pick out of it.

Any team willing to give him 20 million+per is gonna be willing to give up a 2nd or 3rd round pick as well to secure his services.

Philly does this to keep him away from the Redskins and Giants.

Doubt the Eagles care about $2m.  They just don’t want Foles going to the Redskins or Giants.  And despite handshakes, if Redskins gave Foles crazy offer in free agency all bets could be off.

It's $2 mill that's added back into their salary cap. They care. It's not big, but it's something. And they also care negatively because it means their choice will be franchising him or losing him to FA.

Irv, no. You absolutely can NOT tag a player who is going to be under contract next year. In fact, why would you? If he's already under contract, why would you force him to stay with your team by putting him under contract for a year.

The tags are used ONLY for guys who have finished their last year under contract, guys who will be FAs, specifically guys who are about to become UFAs. The whole idea of a tag is for a team to say to a player, "Oh, no you don't go into FA, we're keeping you for another year."

Oh, and Foles wants to start. He might easily accept a contract for less than $20 mill from a team that will commit to make him the starter.

I am pretty sure this works because technically Foles is still under contract until the end of the league year which I believe is March 13th.  He is not currently an UFA but will be @ 4pm 3/13.  Franchising him puts him under contract for the next league year and makes him available for the sign and 3rd round comp to another team.

There are two potential advantages to Tagging - a. draft compensation and b. steering him away from the Redskins

The disadvantage is that Franchise Tagging makes Foles less attractive to teams that have to give up draft compensation and will make a long term deal less likely (depends on the level of draft compensation) and runs the risk of him signing the Tag and then them having to trade his contract.

Actually the safest scenario is for Philly not to franchise tag him (unless they have a wink wink deal where they withdraw the tag without draft compensation to allow Foles to sign a long term deal with a team not in their division). They recoup 2 mill in that case.

This. Foles can void the extension year by paying the $2 million buyout price, not the entire contract. Voiding the extension year by using the buyback provision does nothing to affect the contract before the league year.

He is still under the current contract, no matter what, until the new league year starts in March. Only then is he a UFA if he chose the buyout. If he chose the buyout, making him a UFA at the start of the league year, then he is eligible for the franchise tag.

It's a fun loophole.
