July 4th 78. April Wine, Journey, Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Rolling Stones at Rich Stadium. The Stones were not very good imo. Played a short show with mostly new 'Some Girls' songs. Mick was ridiculously jacked on coke, flying around the stage wagging his finger like a maniac. People attacked the stage after the Stones refused to play an encore. Security at the stage were swinging 2 by 4s at people. I worked crowd control before the show but turned in my shirt and went in to enjoy the show. It was a fun time and afterward we got to raid all the confiscated coolers and booze. We headed out to Sunset Beach and partied for days at my buddies cottage.

Wasn't at the 81 show where Journey got booed evidently, away at school.

Yes they did! I was already a fan of the Clash. As forstbitmic said, "Opened with David Johansson who did an Animals cover and not much else."

To be fair, Johansson was out of place at that venue. The crowd was not kind - very impatient.

The Clash "rocked the casbah"! :w00t:

The Who started to sing "Love, Reign O'er Me" just when it started to rain.

All things considered, without the big video screens they have today, a place like the Ralph is the WORST to see a band. I saw The Who at the Rochester War Memorial Auditorium in the early 70's (with Keith Moon) and it was the best!

I worked crowd control outside at that show until the Clash were playing, then I went in. I was a big Who fan and that show was incredible. Never forget the 'Love, Reign O'er Me' magical rain.

I think it was more that people weren't paying any attention to them as all eyes were diverted to some idiot who was trying to cross the field using one of those cables that held up the screen in the end zone that FG's and XP's hit.

Besides that, George Thorogood opened the show and he won the audience over, Journey couldn't match George.

No, they definitely got booed off the stage.  It was the only time I've ever seen that................You are exactly right about Thorogood rocking the place and then wimpy Journey following.

Journey was NOT the it band in the early 80's.  Everyone had a WTF moment when they were announced as the opening act for that Stones show.   They were and still are a chick band from the era, and the nostalgia act is rewriting history about their popularity back in the day.   They rank right up with REO Speedwagon

Exactly

Agreed.  Journey is not a fit with the Stones and Thorogood.  The promoter no doubt was looking at MTV airtime and national sales and not considering the audience.  I think Buffalo has been short changed a fair amount in this respect.

MTV wasn't even on the air when that concert was put together.  It started in August.  The concert was in September.  It definitely was not a factor.

And it stopped raining just as the song ended, to which Roger Daltrey joked, "I'll bet The Stones can't do that."

That's exactly right except that it was Pete who said it.

My recollection is that it was Daltrey

I'm kind of surprised as Journey was the "it" band of the early 1980's.  But one has to consider the sounds are different between the two.  Thorogood probably has a little more pull with a working class audience.  Still have not found my answer as I can't find the actual MTV clip.  Lots of reunion concert material.  Perhaps the original material is protected from Youtube viewership.

I don't think this is what you are remembering, but at the very end of the "Send Her My Love" video, which shows a live performance in the old Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia...the camera pans out to an aerial shot of....The Cotton Bowl outside Dallas, Texas.

That's not what you are thinking about, is it?

I don't believe so.  Probably will never know until the original video can be seen.  At the time a bunch of friends were under the same impression that I was.  A dusk aerial shot coming from the southeast and I thought a time lapse clip of maybe 2-3 seconds of setting up for the concert.  It would be one thing if it was just me.  Of course groups of people have been fooled before such as those who thought the train trestle shot from Stand By Me was shot at Letchworth when in fact it was shot out west.

The train trestle shot form Trains, Planes and Automobiles WAS Letchworth, though, right?

I would have to watch the footage to know for sure.  The production notes say a lot of filming was done in Batavia and South Dayton, NY so it is possible.  I have not seen it for probably 25 years now.  It does have my favorite character actor William Windom (there was but not any more......) in it.  Maybe I will watch it in full this coming weekend.

I remember that show!  It was raining, and Thorogood was wearing some sort of clear plastic rain slicker.  Funny thing is, I don’t remember Journey at all.  Either I was baked, or Journey was that forgettable.

If George hadn’t opened, I wouldn’t have bothered going in until after Journey anyway.

(Not a fan.)
