I have boxes of old sports cards.  Most from the mid 80’s to mid 90’s.  Everything from baseball, to football and some basketball too.

The thing is a few year ago I looked up the prices of the cards I thought were valuable back in the day and each card was worth like .01.  Not even exaggerating.  An entire box set I had was going for $6.00!   I highly doubt anyone would even want to pay for such low value cards.

Sowhat am I supposed to do with old trading cards?  I would love to sell them but it doesn’t seem like there’s any market.

Right now they are collecting dust.  Is the only option to throw them away or sell them for pennies on the dollar?

I'm in the same boat.  I have a ton of cards.  All my "valuable" cards are in one binder.  Probably about 40 cards worth $5-10 each last time I looked about a year ago.  I figure if I sold em I could get at least $200 but selling by the each would be a pain in the butt.  Who knows.

I've found that the most popular collectibles are usually the items that existed during the childhood of the current retired population.

You've got a large population with disposable money with nothing to do but remember the good ol' days.

This reminds me when I first got the itch to gamble when I was around 12 or 13 years old. Me and my buddies were all big card collectors so we bough packs and boxes of cards. Naturally we ended up with tons of "commons" and needed something to do with them so we came up with a game called flicking. How it worked was we all put up an ante, a decent card worth a few bucks and then picked or placed a random object in the room. We then sat or stood in a designated location and flicked our commons at the target. Whoever got the closest, best of 3, 5 or 7 or whatever got the pot. We also had games where whomever hit the object automatically took the pot. Good times all around and the beginning of my journey into adulthood.

What was spent on them at the time?

im due to inherit about $15,000 acquisition cost of cards from the 80s and 90s

hope I don’t get hit too hard on the capital gains tax when I sell them

Who will buy the common cards?

Nobody.......they are worthless. Everything around mid  to late 80's and beyond was mass produced and are worth nothing. I have thousands of them sitting in my basement along with hundreds of comic books that aren't worth the paper they are printed on. I think @Jay_Fixit suggestion may be another viable option if you want to get some entertainment value.

Sell the common cards as part of a complete set.

Otherwise, keep them and hope so many people think they're worthless, that they become rare from people throwing them away.

Billy, they are worthless.

I once tried to sell four mint condition Guy Lafleur rookie cards for a friend. Every shop I entered had at least one for $150 on display.

couldnt have made $20 with them, it was a dirty and lowdown business and ***** everyone who ripped people off

This worked a decade ago for a colleague....

buy into a bake sale or flea market thing that is for very rich people whose kids will insist on buying your cards for hundreds of dollars....

Late 80s to mid 90s cards are almost completely worthless. Either sell them for a half a tank of gas or give them to your grandkids and tell them to save them for their grandkids. And maybe their grandkids will be able to pay for a full tank of gas
