I’d rather have Kappo on Eichel’s wing for the next 10 years.

Can’t disagree - at 5’10” 166 pounds, Hughes seems a bit small.  Kappo is 3” taller and 15 pounds heavier.

But we do need a decent 2nd line center.

I honestly think that until that crazy March collapse, botterill planned on keeping Housley. I’m sure you remember that interview at the end of February/beginning of March.

Plus every insider (Friedman, McKenzie, LeBrun, Dreger etc) was saying Housley was safe.

And top of what you write here, it is interesting that the decision was Botterill's and only his, unless he's lying.

Said he called Pegula today to tell him he's canning Housley.

It suggests Pegula wasn't thinking in terms of Housley being fired, and certainly not pushing for it himself.  That agrees with Pegula's comments in support of Housley at the NFL meetings in Arizona.

Yet another bad look for Pegula.  He's just not an astute sports fan.  That's been completely established to my satisfaction now.

Scot only did well when he was handed the current SC champion or a team that was 95 percent of the way to winning one before he showed up

The only team he didn't get to the Finals was the Sabres, going all the way back to his 1st NHL gig in St. Louis.

Agreed.  Would be great if the Sabres luck into the 1st or 2nd slot.

They need a legit #2 C, #2 RW, to re-sign Skinner, get a top notch HC (Vigneault is VERY intriguing), and have somebody on the coaching staff that can run a PP.

Get that done (& that's doable) & the team should be in the playoffs this season.  And a legit threat when Mittelstadt & Dahlin grow

into the 2C & 1D roles they'll eventually be ready for.

Still hating that Seattle delayed joining by 1 year because the Sabres will lose a good D-man that fit in LT but would've only lost Hutton or Scandella had they entered for '20-'21 like originally planned.

Pegula is an astute sports fan. That’s his problem. He needs to become an astute owner. It’ll happen eventually.

The Atlantic division is gozing to be absolutely brutal for a while, I think.

We already have Tampa (who just tied a record (with the dynasty redwings) for best regular season Ever, in NHL history), Boston, Toronto.

Montreal has a top tier coach in Claude Julien and are taking steps forward.

Now Florida has Q. They have talent, and just a few seasons ago (when they still had a top tier coach (Gallant)) they finished at/near the top of the division. I fully expect them to become a very good team again. Word is they want both Bobrovsky and Panarin too (and Panarin supposedly loves playing for Q and was already interested in a Florida before he signed, so...).

Edit -forgot to mention the rumors of Steve Yzerman heading to Detroit this offseason... if it happens, I fully expect him to turn Detroit around.

Word is that as of yesterday, LA was already in contract talks with Todd McLellan.

Teams are moving fast on these good veteran coaches, and there’s what, 8 coaching vacancies?

Whatever happens, Buffalo absolutely has to get this hire right if we want any chance at competing in our division, let alone playoffs.

juat listening to the Risto locker clean out interview now and I haven’t heard anything even close to the stuff ROR said last year. Risto gave no reason to overreact and ship him out. So there is no excuse for Botterill to screw a Risto trade up.

The ONLY way I trade him is if some teams offers us a Taylor Hall type 1 for 1 trade (like Edmonton offered for Risto a few years back).

I am legitimately worried that Botterill will make Risto a scapegoat.

they're going about everything wrong on the Sabres side. At least the Bills are looking rosy.

From yesterday -

I also read that they were in on Q.

But he already had a good relationship with Dale Tallon.

Tallon was the one who hired him in Chicago. Twice (once as a scout right after he was fired in Colorado, and then again as a head coach).

Philly was in on him too and missed out.

Theres a lot of coaching vacancies and there are better teams than buffalo looking for a coach. Unfortunately, I am not sure how high on any list we are right now. I guess we will find out soon.

Time for a harder press for the other French Canadian name.

Vigneault or Boudreau? Boudreau would be a good hire IMO. I enjoy his animated style and energy.

After the pitiful display the Sabres put on at the season's end, there's no way Housley could have been retained.

Exactly. The giving up and the head hanging on the bench was disgusting.

Panthers move fast, hire Quenneville as coach

11:52 AM ET-ESPN

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Dale Tallon and Joel Quenneville are together again, and the Florida Panthers are ready for them to recreate their magic.

Quenneville -- who is second on the NHL's all-time victory list -- was hired Monday to coach the Panthers, who started their offseason with a splash. It's also a reunion, as Tallon hired Quenneville to coach Chicago in 2008 and wound up watching him win three Stanley Cups there in a six-year span.

Gronborg should be the guy.

“To me, the only challenge that would be left is the National Hockey League, to be perfectly honest,” said Grönborg. “I’ve kind of done all that stuff and coached some of the best players in the world. Now I’m interested to have my ideas, to [implement] them over a period of time and do them overseas, and kind of challenging the coaching community over in the NHL.

“I bring a different perspective on things.”

Yeah me either. As I said, there are still 7 head coaching vacancies (including the Sabres). I think we are higher on the list than Ottawa, but other than that I’m not sure.

The Sabres have fired a lot of head coaches in recent years and haven’t f8nished better than 8th last since 2012.

They have to get this hire right though.
