TigerJ Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 One question is whether Palmer really wants to be a QB coach in the NFL. Doing what he's doing, he is his own boss and sets his own schedule. Who knows what he's actually earning, but the life of an NFL coach is pretty grueling. For five weeks in the summer you are separated from your family at training cam. Then you have long work weeks during the season with film study and game planning in addition to actually working with the players. Then you're involved with the pre draft process and offseason workouts, OTAs, and minicamp. If you're obsessed with football and your family is on board, fine, but it's a pretty big sacrifice with very little job security otherwise. 1 4

MrEpsYtown Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I would think Rob Chudzinski would be the best hire. Carolina connection, close with McDermott, and did some big things with Cam Newton early in his career. I don't think Cam liked him very much, but he has some big years under his tutelage.
BringBackFergy Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Jordan Palmer had a pretty impressive pre-season game for the Bills in 2015-16 I believe. Anyway, Josh Allen is still a kid. Give him his security blanket. If that means J Palmer, do it.

Low rent? Why would the Ravens brand their new offensive coach as a Bill when they can show him in Chiefs gear? Looks like smart marketing to me.
zonabb Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Best news of the offseason. Culley as QB coach was a major mistake by McDermott and his departure won't be hurtful. A lifetime WR coach with no track record of developing a QB tasked with developing the 7th overall pick was bad from the outset. So yippee!!!! Now fix the OL and the two biggest mistakes they made are being addressed. 3

The point is we need a person who can help Allen know what to do based off of what he is supposed to and what the defense is doing. At least admit it, it would be nice if the person who is tutoring Allen sees the game the way Romo does. The guy knows every play before it happens when he is calling the games.

Meanwhile Mahomes is Mahoming Mahomes had the huge advantage of having a year on the bench to absolutely imprint his mechanics to deep muscle memory. Allen's being needed to play meant that his mechanics were essentially forgotten while he worked on the much more necessary in the moment needs to work on understanding and memorizing game plans and how to understand and work on countering defenses. With more time in the offseason, hopefully Allen can get those mechanics more deeply downloaded. It's great he's already working on it.

Fans assume everyone wants to coach in the NFL. Palmer is on record as saying he loves to work with young guys. No way to know what he would want to do, assuming the Bills are interested.

And because you can't disprove (or prove) a counter-factual, it's impossible to refute. I think fortune plays a large role in destiny. No one can anticipate exactly how an individual will react in different circumstances or project a freak injury. I am not convinced Mahomes would have experienced success here, though I lobbied for us to draft him. What we know: Mahomes was given a red-shirt year to learn, surrounded by excellent coaching and offensive personnel. We also know Allen was thought to need a redshirt year, was thrown into the fire with not much surrounding help. I think his performance was clearly improved after returning from injury. There's reason to be hopeful Allen will be a genuine franchise qb. Everything else is guesswork. I agree and would like to add that watching film of Mahomes in college the kid had this Gunslingers gunslinger mindset . In this way Mahomes is a throwback type of QB like Kelly, Marino, Favre & Elway. He has that unmeasured "it" factor. I was begging the Bills to draft him. Hopefully Allen can develop that type of mindset because he has the tools to be a true Gunslinger type QB. The problem is McBeane seems to want to ruin him by using him like a Cam Newton. I hate when they call that QB draw play i cringe when i see it. Im not saying JA shouldnt run. He should be running within the structure of the passing gm ala Young, Elway & Rodgers. I really believe if we keep using JA like Cam we will ruin him.

He was a QB coach who turned WR coach Culley is an offensive football coach. He knows plenty about the QB position ... it’s not like he was a DB specialist Andy Reid is a “QB guru” who never played QB... was an oline coach by trade and then QB coach for a few seasons ... he knows how to coach offense Every single person around Culley vouches that he’s an amazing coach. Whether QB or WR... he was great for Allen’s development Any thoughts on Palmer and other more realistic candidates who fit with what Daboll is attempting to do with the offense?

HansLanda Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I don't think there is much of a chance Palmer becomes QB coach. He has a sustainable thing going where - I assume - he gets a VERY healthy check from each QB after they are drafted and signed. It's in California, on his terms. Why on earth would he become a QB coach for just one team when he could be fired at any time and his former biz is jeopardized? 1
